Students Traveling Independently

Independent Student Travel on University-Affiliated International Travel

The below steps apply when undergraduate, graduate, and law school students travel internationally or to Puerto Rico on university-affiliated travel without faculty or staff accompanying them.

Notes:

  • Travel registration does not imply travel approval by your school/college. Schools/Colleges may cancel travel any time, and they may have additional requirements for their travelers. Follow your college/unit-specific travel approval steps, if any.
  • Students on “Group Travel Abroad” do not need to complete these steps — the sponsoring LMU department or the Trip Leader will complete the health, safety & security framework on behalf of the group.
  • Due Date: at least 6 weeks prior to program start date

First, determine if your travel counts as University-Affiliated International Travel and then continue with the steps below.

A traveling student who meets one or more of the following criteria is on University-Affiliated International Travel (UAT):

    • Receives LMU in-residence credit for the experience
    • Receives funding from an LMU unit or receives funds managed by LMU for their travel
    • Participates in a travel abroad experience that is necessary to achieve a degree requirement. This could include experiences such as degree milestones, dissertation field research, practical, internships, etc.
    • Travels on a program or trip organized by a Sponsored Student Organization or a program or trip that is formally sanctioned by a LMU unit as a Sponsored Event
    • Travels on a program or trip that is LMU Managed or Organized*

*An international experience is considered LMU Managed or Organized when an LMU unit, faculty, or staff member is involved in creating, funding, or approving the experience, or coordinating the applications and selection of participants.

  • Due Date: 6 weeks prior to program start date

Each student traveling on university-affiliated international travel must complete the Travel Review Plan at least 6 weeks prior to program start date.

Register your travel: International Travel Registry

The International Travel Registry enrolls you in LMU’s provided International SOS insurance.

LMU provides international travel insurance at no cost to students participating in university-affiliated international travel. Coverage includes urgent and emergency medical, mental health, and dental care, as well as security assistance and emergency evacuation services.

Coverage applies during your program dates and extends up to 14 days before and 14 days after the program, provided you have begun your journey and are more than 100 miles from the LMU campus.

This coverage is intended for urgent and emergent needs while traveling and is not a substitute for comprehensive major medical or personal travel insurance. Students are strongly encouraged to maintain their existing major medical insurance and to consider purchasing supplemental travel insurance for expenses or circumstances not covered by LMU’s policy, including pre-existing conditions, trip cancellation or interruption, lost or delayed luggage, and other travel-related losses.

The link below provides information about optional travel insurance plans that may offer these additional protections.
