Searching for Life in Space

LMU Emily Hawkins and student in a lab

Could life exist beneath the frozen surfaces of distant moons? That question is at the center of a new $300,000, two-year research grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) awarded to Emily Hawkins, assistant professor of physics at Loyola Marymount University (LMU). Hawkins’ project, “Experimental Investigation of Vital Nutrient Transport in Icy Ocean Worlds,” builds on her research into the fluid dynamics of subsurface oceans on icy moons – work she has advanced at LMU since 2020.
