April 9, 2012

Dear LMU Community:

It is with sadness that I inform you of the death of Michael D. Grady, professor of mathematics and a former chair of the department for 12 years.  Mike passed away at his home in Westchester on April 4, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 65 years old.

Mike joined the LMU faculty 37 years ago and was highly esteemed as a teacher.  He was involved in LMU at many levels, serving on numerous department and university committees, including the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees and the Honors Program Advisory Council.  He also was a summer freshman orientation adviser and a dedicated counselor to his students.

He earned his doctorate at the University of Utah in 1975. Mike’s scholarly work included being published in the journal Transactions of the American Mathematical Society as well as co-author of several books and manuals.  He co-authored higher-math textbooks, including “Modern College Algebra and Trigonometry” and “Precalculus.”

Mike is survived by his wife, Mary-Margaret, M.A. ’02; two sons, Sean ’01 (Beth) and Ryan ’04, M.A. ’10 (Crystal) and other relatives.

Services are planned for 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, in Sacred Heart Chapel.  The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Dr. Michael D. Grady Scholarship in Mathematics, Loyola Marymount University, 1 LMU Drive, University Hall Suite 2800, Los Angeles 90045-2659, Attn: Alma Vorst.

Please keep Mike and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

David W. Burcham
