AI @ LMU: Human Flourishing in the Age of AI

At Loyola Marymount University, we believe that the goal of education is, at its core, about human formation. We understand AI as not simply a set of new tools but an emerging context that is reshaping how we learn, work, create, decide, and relate to one another. Loyola Marymount University prepares students to adapt to technological change by building and practicing the skills that assure human agency. Through research, teaching, and dialogue, we are advancing a human-centered approach that serves the common good.

Lead

LMU faculty approach AI as both a tool and an object of inquiry. Drawing on their research expertise, they are driving policy, partnering with industry, and changing the conversation about AI. Through this work, our faculty are helping to shape a world where technology serves human needs and human inquiry drives technological innovation.

Computer science professor Jared Coleman organized a three-day workshop exploring how AI can responsibly support the preservation and revitalization of endangered Indigenous languages. Funded by a $50,000 National Science Foundation grant, the event brought together more than 60 Indigenous community members, researchers, technologists, linguists, educators, and students.

Learn

Our Jesuit and Marymount educational traditions call us to preserve the durable skills that assure our students not only make it, but make it matter, in a rapidly changing world.

Our signature curricular programs are carefully crafted to provide our students with a shared intellectual foundation, equipping them with the capacities of reflective judgement, ethical decision-making, creativity, and agency required to navigate a technologically advanced world.

Text that says

Every student at LMU completes our Core Curriculum. The Core Curriculum is a shared set of classes that provides the intellectual foundation of an LMU education. Core course focus on building fundamental skills in critical thinking, asking novel questions, engaging complexity, making ethical judgements, communicating with clarity, and drawing connections across different ways of knowing. Put differently, our Core Curriculum ensures that every LMU graduate is prepared not simply to use emerging technologies, but to understand, evaluate, and shape the world they are creating.

Text that says

At LMU, we believe that education is fundamentally about formation. How students approach learning is just as important as what they learn. The Intellectual Character Initiative is a campus-wide commitment to forming students with the habits and capacities for lifelong learning. Through the Virtues of the Lion Mind—curiosity, intellectual humility, intellectual autonomy, open-mindedness, intellectual courage, and intellectual perseverance—we cultivate the intellectual character students need to pursue knowledge, exercise good judgment, think for themselves, and continue learning throughout their lives.

The M.S. in Business Analytics prepares students to transform complex data into actionable business insights.

Adapt

In the classroom and beyond, we are adapting by exploring new tools, redesigning assignments and processes, and building frameworks to determine when—and when not—to use AI.
