LMU Alumni Offer Words of Wisdom at Silicon Beach Networking Event

Two Silicon Beach executives and fellow LMU graduates reflected on their college lives and shared career advice with students and alumni at a recent Playa Vista networking event. The gathering at the Centerpointe Club featured a wide-ranging conversation with LMU President Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D.; Claudine Cazian Britz, '00, head of entertainment partnerships for Instagram; and Sean Kane, '99, entrepreneur and co-founder of the Honest Co. LMU's Eric Strauss on Human-Animal Interactions at PetSpace in Playa Vista

"Do dogs actually love us, or are we just the smell that brings them food?" A member of the audience raised that question to Eric Strauss, President's Professor of Biology at LMU, at a recent Wallis Annenberg PetSpace event in Playa Vista. The center facilitates animal adoptions and offers classes, educational programs and lectures designed to deepen the bonds among humans and their pets. The event, "Everything (We Wish We Knew) About Dogs and People," allowed Strauss to share his expertise on human-animal interactions. Read more.

Join the Playa Vista Campus Design Contest

Do you want to leave your mark on LMU's new Playa Vista Campus? The university invites all students, faculty, staff and alumni to submit artwork ideas for the campus' elevator lobby design contest. The winning design will adorn the open space that greets visitors on the second floor of LMU's new 50,000-square-foot campus in the Brickyard. It is slated to open in fall 2018 and will provide space for School of Film and Television graduate programs and other university initiatives. Read more.

LMU Students, Alums Join Fullscreen Media Think Tank

Four SFTV students and recent alums joined a Fullscreen Media think tank this summer to help generate and develop ideas for the Silicon Beach company's streaming video-on-demand platform. Think tank participants, who are paid for their work, are typically given an agenda with ideas to explore — along with access to the Fullscreen app, the internet and a whiteboard. They read scripts, loglines and pitches, view demo clips, and brainstorm show ideas. Read more.

Loyola Serves as Hub for International Entrepreneurs

M.B.A. students and entrepreneurs from Tel Aviv University had the chance to share their ideas and gain advice from executives, venture capitalists and attorneys recently at Loyola Law School. The event was part of Tel Aviv University's IDEAS Immersion initiative – a multi-week program facilitating connections between its students and investors and companies in Silicon Beach and Silicon Valley. What is Silicon Beach? LMU's Center for the Study of L.A. Recently Posed the Question to Voters

The name Silicon Beach may be relatively new, but it is beginning to make its way into the region's consciousness, a survey by LMU's Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles has found. When StudyLA posed the question "What is Silicon Beach?" during its recent voter exit poll, nearly 40 percent of those surveyed correctly answered that the moniker refers to L.A.'s growing tech and startup hub. LMU students distributed 2,829 exit surveys on Nov. 8 at 25 randomly selected L.A. city polling places. Read more.

LMU SFTV Students Get Advice, Encouragement from Entertainment Industry Professionals

Like many of the Loyola Marymount University students seated in front of her, Route One Entertainment's Sophia Dilley once questioned how she'd find her way in the film industry. "My whole start was interning," said Dilley, a 2010 LMU alumna who is vice president of development and production for the L.A.-based entertainment finance company. "I didn't really know where it was going to take me. I knew I wanted to be in it. I knew ultimately I wanted to produce and direct." Read more.

LMU Hosts Silicon Beach Expo in University Hall

Representatives from a host of local start-up companies gathered at LMU on Friday, Feb. 3, to network and share business ideas during the 2017 Silicon Beach Expo. This year's expo attracted hundreds of participants, including an estimated 150 LMU students — the largest student representation to date. From 9 a.m. to noon, the expo took over the first floor of University Hall, welcoming companies including Purple Squirrel, Name Drop, Kruze Consulting, Spectrum Business, Vocatio, StokeShare, Doggie Buddies, Cue Career, Tucker Ellis and many more.
