With a 3-0 sweep of No. 6 ranked Stanford Dec. 4, the LMU women’s volleyball team joined women’s soccer as the second Lions team this fall to qualify for the Sweet 16 of an NCAA tournament. Lions volleyball will face No. 9 Kansas at the Jenny Craig Pavilion at the University of San Diego on Friday, Dec. 11 at 5:30 p.m. (go to www.lmulions.com for more information).
The Lions traveled to Stanford’s home court in Palo Alto, California, for the first two matches of the tournament. With a 3-1 victory in the opening game, the Lions knocked off Colorado State, ranked No. 13 in the nation and undefeated in Mountain West Conference. In meeting Stanford, LMU was facing an opponent with six national championships and 35 straight appearances in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament, including a final four appearance in 2014. LMU’s victory came with scores of 28-26, 26-16, and 25-23.
In October, Coach Tom Black earned his 100th career win with LMU after being hired in 2010. Black, who also is assistant coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team, has led the Lions to the NCAA tournament in three of the past four seasons. LMU finished the 2015 season tied for third in the West Coast Conference, registering road sweeps of No. 12 UCLA and San Diego as well as a home victory over No. 11 BYU.
