Patrick J. Cahalan, S.J.

Father CahalanPatrick J. Cahalan, S.J., Chancellor of Loyola Marymount University, is a historian, educator, administrator and priest.

Upon graduating from Bellarmine College Prep, San Jose, he entered the Society of Jesus in August, 1952. He received his B.A. from Gonzaga University in 1958. In 1965, he was ordained in San Francisco, California. He earned his M.A. in Theology from Santa Clara University in 1966 and his M.A. in history in 1968 from Loyola University of Los Angeles at which time he was enrolled in Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society.

From 1967-69 he was Assistant Dean of Students of Loyola University of Los Angeles. In 1969 he was named President/Rector of Loyola High School of Los Angeles. From 1975-81 he was Executive Vice President of Loyola High School and from 1981 to 1996 he was President/Treasurer of Loyola High School.

In 1997 he was named Associate Chancellor of Loyola Marymount University and in 2002 he was appointed Chancellor of Loyola Marymount University.

He has served on the Boards of Trustees of Loyola High School of Los Angeles, Santa Clara University and the California Province of the Society of Jesus. He served on the Boards of Directors of the Jesuit Secondary Education Association and the Karl Kirchgessner Foundation. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Century Council and that of the Santa Clara Mission Cemetery and was a member of the Investment Committee of the California Province of the Society of Jesus.

He is a recipient of the Medallion of Merit, Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Los Angeles, California, the St. Ignatius Loyola Medallion, Loyola High School of Los Angeles, The Cahalan Award, Loyola High School Alumni Association and Santa Claran of the Year, Santa Clara University Alumni Association, Los Angeles Chapter.
