Networking: It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you!

The old adage, “It’s not what you know but who you know,” rings truer than ever in today’s economic times.  In order to transition into the workplace, it is no longer enough to complete college and receive a degree.  One’s ability to get hired or even secure an interview is critically dependent on the extent of one’s professional network and the ability of others to advocate for you.

What does this mean?  Long before graduation, students must diligently and purposefully seek out those opportunities that will place them in front of people responsible for hiring.  Having a professional network allows you to develop a team of supporters who can be your eyes for potential employment opportunities.  Additionally, having a professional network affords you the edge of establishing a level of trust and bonding unavailable though online submissions, career fairs and other impersonal hiring processes.

Fortunately, creating a professional network is simple.  Start with seeking out those alumni and friends currently working in the professional industry into which you seek to transition.  Utilizing popular social media sites as LinkedIn and JobFox are also good professional choices.  LMU Seniors and Alumni can solicit assistance in the form of informational interviews from other LMU Alumni through the University’s Alumni Relations office.  Attending campus career/job fairs, information sessions, information tables, industry events and other career services sponsored activities places you and keeps you in close proximity with those directly responsible for hiring.
