- Submits to Office for International Students & Scholars (OISS):
- Completed OISS J-1 Request Form
- Copy of financial documentation if non-LMU funding
- Attach spouse and children’s info to J-1 Request Form if family accompanying Exchange Visitor (EV) to U.S.

Step 2 |

| OISS |
- Reviews Request Form; contacts department with any questions
- Enters EV data in SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) and issues Form DS-2019
- Prepares the DS-2019 packet and sends to department:
- Form DS-2019
- Welcome letter & checklist (i.e. SEVIS brochure, visa application info, mandatory health insurance)

- Sends the DS-2019 packet to the Exchange Visitor via DHL

Step 3 |
|
|
| Exchange Visitor |
- Pays SEVIS fee on-line after receiving Form DS-2019
- Schedules visa appointment (not applicable to Canadian citizens)

| U.S. Embassy/ Consulate |
- Reviews application, conducts security background check, issues visa stamp
|
| Exchange Visitor |
- Arrives in U.S. (may arrive 30 days before or no later than 30 days after program start date)
- At port of entry, receives Form I-94 card and presents passport and Form DS-2019 to U.S. Dept of Homeland Security official

Step 4 |
|

| Exchange Visitor/ Dependents |
- Checks in with OISS immediately upon arrival (no later than 30 days from start date) with visa documents (passport, Form DS-2019, Form I-94, evidence of health insurance)

| OISS |
- Reviews visa documents and assists with any corrections
- Notifies DHS via SEVIS that scholar has begun program participation within 30 days of Form DS-2019 start date
|
| Exchange Visitor + OISS |
- Attends OISS meeting covering issues such as maintaining J-1 visa status, travel, employment, social security number, DMV and adjusting to life in U.S.
|
Academic Services/ Human Resources |
- If receiving LMU/LLS funding:
- EV completes Form I-9 on or before first day of employment
- EV registers in Glacier, non-resident tax compliance system
