H1N1 Student Housing Resource Page
If you are feeling flu-like symptoms you are encouraged to go home or stay with a relative/friend off campus until the symptoms subside and your temperature has returned to normal for 24 hours. Please notify your Resident Advisor or Resident Director of your symptoms and your plan for recovery. Meet your building staff here! While sick they can best assist you for updates and information.
The H1N1 flu has been mild to moderate and is not expected to be more severe than the flu seen during the regular flu season. Most people will not need medical attention. However, in some situations if you have a chronic medical condition such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart, lung and/or an immune system disorder; and/or you are pregnant you may be at greater risk for complications should you have flu or flu-like symptoms. Therefore, it is important for you to seek medical advice.
Symptoms of the flu and H1N1 include:
- Fever over 100 degrees
- Cough
- Sore throat
Other common flu symptoms include:
- Headache
- Runny nose
- Muscle Aches
How to best stop the spread of disease:
- Frequently washing your hands with soap
- Coughing and sneezing into a tissue or your elbow
- Going home if you are feeling sick and until the fever subsides for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication
- Clean your room or apartment regularly. A cleaning solution with 5% bleach and 95% water is recommended
- 5% bleach and 95% water ratio is the recommended solution
- Notifying a Residence Life staff member with your symptoms and your plan for recovery
Housing Policies
LMU Student Housing does not have permanent or temporary isolation rooms for residents with flu-like symptoms or their roommates/suitemates. Residents who become sick are asked to go home or stay with a relative/friend off campus. If a resident is unable to go home they can stay in their room but must stay isolated until fever subsides for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication. Residence Life staff members will assist sick students with ordering and delivery of meals.
Please note any student who is sick and isolated, on or off campus, will need to contact their professors or department chairs letting them know of their absence from class.
