What can we do during the time between contract periods?

The following are a few examples of how the Resident Directors used their ‘summer vacation’.

With the month and a half off between contracts I found a part time job off campus and took some time off for a vacation. It worked well for me.

I was able to work as a summer RD for Summer Conference Housing. It was a great job because I continued to get paid throughout the summer and only worked nights. I think our summer break is a great opportunity to get involved around campus, around the neighborhood or to just take a couple weeks off and enjoy life before the hustle and bustle starts again.

During my month and a half off contract I worked as the special projects assistant for LMU Career Development Services. This was an amazing experience. I believe the chance to work in another department within the student affairs division allowed me to expand my skill set, develop new relationships, and learn a great deal more about the functioning of LMU. Overall, I loved and appreciated the opportunity I had in my six weeks off contract.

I really enjoyed taking the summer off. It was a nice time to both recharge from the year, and have more freedom to explore what the city has to offer – the beach, museums, shopping, live music. LA is a huge place, but by the end of the summer, I felt more connected to it, having gotten a firmer grasp of what LA is all about. I would definitely consider taking the time off again – there’s so much more in this town that I haven’t seen yet!

During the summer between my first and second years as an RD here, I applied and got the New Student Orientation position for the month of June. Having done that, I would suggest to new Resident Directors that they take the 6 weeks off. As full-time employees, it is a rarity that you can have a full-time job and get 6 weeks off in the summer and still retain medical benefits.
