Become a Mentor
Mentoring is the process by which an experienced person provides advice, support, and encouragement to a less experienced person. This can be done in a variety of ways. LMU provides the option of joining our informal (Professional Networking) mentoring program, or becoming a formal mentor with guidelines and structured meetings.
The professional network component can be accessed through the LionJobs website:
http://lionjobs.lmu.edu/employers
Students can then contact you by whatever means you place on the website.
The formal component actually matches students with a professional in their field of choice. CDS will sponsor the first meeting and provide a flexible structure for their interactions throughout the year.
Depending on the program in which you are participating, as a mentor you are expected to provide encouragement, guidance and/or support to your student. Some of the basic mentoring activities can include, but are not limited to, one-on-one interviews, job shadowing, site tours, active listening, and of course internships.
Possible students seeking mentoring experiences can range from your typical freshman with little idea as to what educational or professional direction they may want to pursue to graduate students in their final year of studies seeking to enter the workplace with a professional network behind them.
Career Development Services hosts a wide range of support services to include career counseling, resume writing, online job searching, interviewing techniques and on-campus interviewing to assist you and your protégé with preparing for career related research and employment searches. As a mentor you are welcome to tap into our comprehensive array of services.
