The Campus
Facilities Management has made tremendous strides in integrating sustainability projects across campus operations. We have a thriving recycling department which saves thousands of dollars in tipping fees, exceeds our mandates under Title 24 and employs six full-time workers and seven student workers. Six percent of our annual campus electricity consumption comes from $4.5 million worth of solar panels on campus, which generates savings far in excess of our annual loan payments on the financing. We have undertaken a $2.2 million lighting program, replacing incandescent bulbs with T12, T8, T5, LED and compact fluorescent bulbs. We save $70,000 per year by using recycled water for irrigation. Our showerheads, faucets, toilets, exit signs, washers and dryers have all been evaluated as part of a campus-wide energy audit.
LMU's business operations also serve as a testament to the university's commitment to environmental responsibility. Classrooms and offices are evaluated for opportunities to conserve energy and resource consumption. LMU also works closely with its auxiliary business partners such as Sodexho (campus dining) and Follett (campus bookstore) to identify and encourage responsible business practices.
The proposed Master Plan Project reflects LMU’s strong commitment to the environment. All new buildings on campus will be sustainable, green buildings. LMU will continue to utilize recycled water and xeric landscaping whenever possible to reduce water usage. The proposed Master Plan Project also will move more students on campus to reduce vehicle miles traveled to campus each day. Additionally, the proposed Master Plan Project designates space for a future green line stop on Lincoln Boulevard.
Sustainability continues to be integrated throughout the university. Below you will find more detailed information about the following areas of campus operations:
