Research Symposium Spotlights Undergrads

Loyola Marymount University held its First Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium on March 22. The daylong event provided a unique opportunity for more than 150 undergraduate students of various disciplines to share their research findings, creative work and other educational experiences with peers, educators and the community. Students presented their work in oral presentations, panel discussions and poster sessions.

Vice President for Undergraduate Education Rae Linda Brown says this year’s theme, “Foundations for the Future,” reflects an understanding of and appreciation for the benefits of faculty/student collaborative projects. “Undergraduate engagement in research and creative activity enhances a student’s professional communication skills, prepares students to work effectively as part of a team, encourages them to explore graduate school opportunities and potential career paths, and sharpens critical thinking skills,” she says.

Participating students have conducted scientific research locally, such as in the neighboring Ballona Wetlands; nationally, in collaboration with other universities such as Notre Dame; and internationally, in Tibet and Peru, among other nations. The symposium also showcased the creative work of students in dance, music, creative writing, screenwriting and art history.

“This event reflects Loyola Marymount University’s commitment to academic excellence both inside and outside of the classroom,” Brown says. “It brings to the forefront the accomplishments of our students and the mentoring efforts and expertise of our stellar faculty.”
