ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS EXHIBIT: To commemorate the centennial of the beginning of the construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct, the Department of Archives and Special Collections has developed an exhibit on the Owens Valley, that central actor in the growth of Los Angeles because of its water. In the early twentieth century, Los Angeles bought up much of the valley to obtain its water, and in 1908 began construction of the great Los Angeles Aqueduct to bring this water to the city. The exhibit provides rare photographs of the struggle between the city and the valley in the 1920s over water, as well as images of people of the valley and their rural way of life centered on small towns, mining, and agriculture from the 1880s through the 1930s.
The exhibit is open during library hours from August 18, 2007 through May 11, 2009, in the atrium of the library. For futher information, select this title "The Land of Little Rain".
