
SFTV ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF ‘FILM OUTSIDE THE FRAME’ STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL
Actor Kurt Russell Honored with the 2007 ‘Infinite Power of Story Lifetime Achievement Award’
LOS ANGELES, CA, October 2, 2007 – Jury Award winners of the 2007 Loyola Marymount University School of Film & Television (SFTV) “Film Outside the Frame” Festival have been announced by SFTV Dean Teri Schwartz. In addition, Dean Schwartz announced that actor, producer, writer and director Kurt Russell is the recipient of the Festival’s 2007 “Infinite Power of Story Lifetime Achievement Award.”
In keeping with the Festival’s theme, The New Storytellers are Unique, the prizes in all five jury award categories were presented to SFTV students who created films with personal vision and compelling narratives, both fictional and documentary.
Dean Schwartz commented, “The outstanding array of films in this year’s festival exemplify our SFTV vision to serve as a beacon of light for master visual storytelling, grounded in humanism, innovation and diversity in all its forms. I’m delighted that our students and their work have received these honors and recognition. They are truly remarkable and impeccably personify the new storytellers.
“The opportunity to recognize the significant and lasting contributions of Kurt Russell during his prolific four decade career is extremely gratifying. His body of work is testament to his personal dedication to the power of story and filmmaking.”
The Best Film and Best Director awards were presented to Jonathan Dee for “Lily,” in which a young photographer’s journey to Africa exposes his heart. Honored for Best Screenplay was Will Hyler for “This Is How We Know,” a story of an unexpected series of events that became cataclysmically aligned. The recipient of the Best Documentary Award was Gina Vaccaro for “CU @ DQ,” which begins as a tale of a community landmark that unexpectedly transforms into an intricate family portrait. The Bernard Abbene Comedy Writing Award went to Louis Sweeney for “Pot Luck,” a reflection on meeting a girlfriend’s parents while Petra Tikalova was presented with The Dreier Family Editing Award for a meditation on landscapes both natural and man-made entitled, “Observations.”
A Blue-Ribbon panel of judges – Kim Adelman, short film columnist for indieWIRE; Lou Arkoff, motion picture and television producer and member of the SFTV Arts Council; John F. Cosgrove, producer of six time Emmy-nominated series “Unsolved Mysteries” and LMU Trustee and Chair of the SFTV Film & Television Arts Council; and Kathryn Nielsen, Vice President and Controller for Columbia TriStar Motion Pictures and an LMU Regent – selected the top works.
