Within the framework of the university’s mission to educate the whole person, the Department of Art and Art History fully embraces the primacy of a liberal arts education. To enable this goal, the faculty of the department utilize philosophical, ethical, social and historical developments in their teaching of the visual arts.

Through creative and scholarly study competence is developed in the studio arts on both technical and conceptual levels. The discipline of art history methodologies are approached from a phenomenological and critical stance. The faculty seek to develop unique capabilities for individual artistic expression and to provide students with the intellectual and aesthetic means to make informed choices in a rapidly changing world.

To implement these goals, the faculty is committed to excellence in teaching, vitalized by creative activity and scholarly research. The Studio Art and Art History faculty at LMU provide a solid pedagogy in the visual arts while expanding humanitarian and social consciousness in their students. The department is deeply committed to a curricular flexibility which reflect the technological, intellectual, professional, and aesthetic needs of our students.
