Sat and Sun, June 14-15, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.:

Pranayamas, Mantras and Meditation

This is an introductory course to the practices of Pranayama, Mantras
and Meditation. Bhakti/Mantra Yoga is considered to be the most
important method of bringing a sense of peace to the mind in Kali Yuga (present
time). Chanting mantras or Parayana, Mantra Japa or repeating the
mantra over and over again, Mantra dhyana or meditating on the mantra and
its import, are the methods reported by a very large number of Bhakti
Yogis. In this program several important mantras, chanting methods and
the Bhakti or devotion as a well-structured mantra Yoga practice will be
introduced. This is a great course for students looking to develop or
deepen a pranayama practice and teachers who are looking to broaden
their understanding of pranayama theory, practice, sequencing and healing
benefits. We will focus on the role of the mind in breathing practices
and fascinating yet subtle physical alignment techniques to help ground
the practitioner in mind and body. Physiology, psychology and academic
study come together in this unique course. Bring a sitting cushion, Yoga
mat and your intellect.

Vinyasa Yoga (Asana) Practicum

Vinyasa Krama is a method of linking breath to movement that
Krishnamacharya used to teach Yoga. In this practicum, Special Vinyasa sequences,
like several Sun Salutation methods and other unique sequences, will
be taught. Adapting Hatha Yoga to individual needs and developing a
sustainable, progressive personal Yoga practice will also be discussed.
Will count toward the 200-hour Teacher Training Program.

Readings in the Yoga Yagnyavalkya

Yoga Yagnyavalkya is a stunningly refreshing text on Yoga. Yoga of
different schools - Hatha, Kundalini and Sanyasa - find in it a
considerable amount of information and detail not normally found in standard or
traditional texts. In 12 chapters the sage Yagnyavalkya explains asanas,
pranayama, meditation and other philosophical concepts. It has a very
comprehensive treatment of Yoga. Those who have studied the more popular
Yoga texts like Yoga Sutras and Hathayoga Pradipika, will find the
discussions very stimulating.

Saturday and Sunday, June 21-22, 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m.:

The meaning of OM - Exposition from the Madukya Upanishad

The most profound Mantra of the vedas is Pranava or OM. It is said in
the Vedas that creation started with the utterance of the mantra OM. It
is the only Mantra referred to by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras. Great
Vedic sages have explained OM as representing the Ultimate Reality, the
undifferentiated Consciousness or Parabrahman. The Mandukya Upanishad
of the Atharva Veda beautifully and cogently identifies the individual
consciousness to the ultimate consciousness. A commentary called
"Mandukya Karika" written by Gaudapada, the teacher of the Guru of Adi
Sankara, which will be the basis of discussion in the program, stands out as
an excellent exposition of the Upanishad and also the advaita or
non-dual philosophy. Yoga students interested in this sibling Advaita Vedanta
philosophy to Yoga and also knowing the esoteric meaning of OM or
pranava will find it very absorbing.
