There’s more to comic book superheroes than flying fists, colorful capes and explosion-filled battles. As key artifacts of pop culture, they also reflect and contribute to our attitudes about parts of our own society—including race.  

That subject is what Professor Adilifu Nama has focused on. Nama, the chair of LMU’s African American Studies department, recently published a book on the subject, “Super Black: American Pop Culture and Black Superheroes,” and hosted a colloquium at LMU for scholars and comic book creators to discuss the issue.
