To see all the children and hear the noise, it’s hard to remember that the LMU Summer Sports Camps are at heart an individual experience. Each camper in each program gets encouragement and instruction in a variety of sports. Fun is the goal as the camp counselors – mostly Division 1 assistant coaches and student-athletes from Loyola Marymount University – offer instruction and support.
For one youngster, the LMU Summer Sports Camps led to bigger things: She got her introduction to water polo in the LMU pool during a summer sports camp and years later played the sport in high school and college.
“It’s one of the most rewarding aspects of being involved in the camps,” said Faith Sauerwald, who with Addie Casey has administered the camps for 11 years. “We’ve seen families’ children grow up over the years.”
Sauerwald and Casey said that one of the best features of the camps is the involvement of the LMU student-athletes. “The campers love the connection to the athletes,” said Casey. “The student-athletes are certainly a big draw, along with the campus setting and the LMU name.” Though they give instruction in their sports, Casey and Sauerwald stressed that the student-athletes are primarily focused on the campers’ well-being and enjoyment.
