LMU Faculty Members Receive Dance Awards

Two Loyola Marymount University dance professors were honored with Lester Horton Dance Awards for their outstanding performance pieces. Damon Patrick Rago, associate professor of dance, won awards for outstanding achievement in performance for his evening-length piece, “MANIFOLD.” Holly Johnston, professor of modern dance, also won for outstanding achievement in performance for her work entitled, “experiment one” as part of the Ledges and Bones Dance Project.

The Lester Horton Dance Awards were founded by the Dance Resource Center of Greater Los Angeles to honor excellence in concert dance by Southland artists, technicians, teachers and others devoted to the field. The Horton’s have honored individual performance as well as ensemble performances, as well as achievements in technical craftsmanship, excellence in music for dance, set design, lighting design, and costume design. The Lester Horton Dance Awards are a significant event for the organization as they recognize the uniqueness of dance in Los Angeles by honoring the vast differences among its artists.

This year, an unprecedented number of LMU faculty, as well as two LMU students, were nominated.

“It is an honor for even one artist to be nominated and very unusual for a smaller university like LMU to have this many nominees,” said Judy Scalin, co-chair of the Theatre Arts and Dance Department. “The amount of nominations serves as a testament to the quality and skill of the dance faculty and their impressions left on their students.”
