Fright Night 2011

Date(s)/Time(s)/Duration/Location(s): Last Thursday in October from 3:30-6:30 pm in Sunken Garden and Campus Ministry, Malone and the Sacred Heart Chapel Basement.

Campus Organization, Contact Person and Contact Information: Campus Ministry, April Gutierrez, agutie30@lmu.edu, 310.338.5707

Activity:  Every year Campus Ministry hosts Fright Night with Athletics, RHA, EIS and many other student organizations. This special event invites 500 second through fifth grade children from inner-city and local neighborhoods to LMU's Westchester campus for a safe and fun Halloween experience. Children are greeted and guided by Loyola Marymount student volunteers dressed up in Halloween attire, through haunted houses, Halloween activities, candy hunts, an afternoon meal, and other exciting student led activities.

Experiences: Fright Night is a wonderful way to do on campus service and reach out to the greater community beyond LMU. An LMU student can choose to be a tour guide, activity coordinator, meal server or event organizer. As an activity coordinator, students host a table with an activity for the elementary school children to enjoy. As a tour guide, you are able to interact with the children by playing games, collecting goodies, designing costumes and touring the campus. Many LMU students also participate by dressing up in creative Halloween costumes so that they can relate to the students and make it more fun for the children.

Keywords: On-campus service, Children, Halloween

Background: The social justice program grew out of an LMU student’s efforts to bring children from a nearby school where she tutored to a safe environment to celebrate Halloween. More than 20 years later, LMU Fright Night has grown to serve nearly 500 children from 12 L.A. area organizations and schools as a collaboration among Campus Ministry, Resident Housing Association, the first-year residence halls, service organizations and LMU athletes. It is a practical opportunity for LMU students to deepen their commitment to service.
