Learning and Teaching Environments that Foster Transfer - Wine, Cheese, and Chocolate Gathering [Event Flyer]
Presented by: Vandana Thadani, Ph.D., Psychology
What better way to think about enhancing learning and teaching than over wine, cheese, and chocolate with our favorite colleagues…. This year, through the “Learning and Teaching Environments that Foster Transfer” program we’ve explored ways of helping students learn deeply, so that they’re able to actually transfer their learning to new problems and contexts. In this WCC gathering, let’s share ideas around related topics in past CTE events. For example, recently Dr. Diane Halpern talked about critical thinking. Do you have any strategies or tools for encouraging critical thinking you’d be willing to share? Earlier in the semester, I talked about using “teacher tasks and questions” (TTQs) to promote metacognition (or reasoning, or connections between ideas, etc). Are there TTQs you use in class that are promising for ratcheting up what/how students think? Dr. Jason Baehr has talked about cultivating intellectual virtues. Do you have strategies for helping students embrace learning and persevere through challenge? Bring ideas to share (and if you have materials you think others would like, bring those along also)—or just come and absorb. All are welcome, whether or not you attended these CTE events! This is an informal, low-key gathering, and I can promise you calories you’ll love consuming and a chance to chat, share, and reconnect with wonderful colleagues!
Refreshments will be provided, please RSVP to teachers@lmu.edu or call x85866.
This event is part of Vandana Thadani's Faculty Associate project Learning and Teaching Environments that Foster Transfer.
