Fr. Gilbert Sunghera, SJ


Imagination in Sacred Space: Environment and Spirituality

Gilbert Sunghera, SJ, is a consultant for architectural design, based in the University of Detroit, assisting in projects across the country. He will give a presentation on the influence of architecture upon spiritual experience on Thursday, September 21, at 3:30pm. A reception will follow. Fr. Sunghera's remarks will make use of his knowledge of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.

Gilbert Sunghera, S.J. earned a BA at the University of California, Irvine, where his focus was on Environmental Psychology – how people are affected by their built environments. He has a Master in Architecture from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. After working three years as an architectural designer, primarily with non-profit groups in Los Angeles, he entered religious formation with the Jesuits, and was ordained in 2002 after receiving an M.Div from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. His first assignment was serving as Director of Liturgy for a large multicultural congregation in San Jose, California. In the fall of 2004 he continued his study on the relationship between religion and architecture at Yale University, earning a Master of Sacred Theology from the Divinity School. He currently services as a Senior Research Design Fellow at the Detroit Collaborative Design Center (a non-profit architectural firm based in the School of Architecture at the University of Detroit Mercy) where he explores issues surrounding the creation of Sacred Space, facilitates workshops for building committees, and consults with designers crafting worship environments. He will speak on the role that architecture has on one's faith journey, as both designer and recipient of intentional environments.
