Meet the Director
Dermot Ryan serves as the Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research and is an Assistant Professor of English at Loyola Marymount University. Dr. Ryan’s
research focuses on British and Irish literature of the long eighteenth century with a particular emphasis on print culture and postcolonial theory.
His essays on the intersections of print culture and empire have appeared in Studies in Romanticism, Eighteenth-Century Studies and Études irlandaises. His first book, Technologies of Empire: Writing, Imagination and the Making of Imperial Networks (forthcoming from the University of Delaware Press), explores the ways in which eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century authors use imagination and writing not only to conceptualize emerging global empires, but also to contribute to their consolidation and expansion.
