Honors research & Scholarships

Research + Scholarships

The Undergraduate Research Symposium is a showcase for undergraduate research held in the spring semester and is open to the entire University. All Honors students are encouraged to submit abstracts of their work by the annual deadline for consideration. All senior Honors thesis students must submit for the symposium (submission, however, does not guarantee acceptance). See the Honors students who participated in the 2012 Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) is a grant connected to the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. BCLA students receive $5000 to conduct independent research during the summer under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Students majoring in any discipline in BCLA are eligible, and Honors students are encouraged to apply.

The Honors Summer Research Fellowships are awarded for independent research and creative work in the summer. Each fellow receives up to $5000 to cover all expenses related to the project proposed (travel, food, lodging, supplies, materials, etc.). Recipients of Honors Summer Research Fellowships must present their work at THIS IS HONORS in the spring semester. In the past, Honors students have gone to India, Venice, China, and even the Great Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. See this year's Honors Summer Research Fellows.

Students can take advantage of the Honors Ambassadorial Grant, which funds those who will present work in their discipline at non-honors conferences. The program will provide funds for travel, lodging, food, etc. in accordance with LMU’s travel policy. These grants are available for any student in good standing, who, by exhibiting academic excellence in his/her own field, represents the University Honors Program when traveling. Recipients of this grant are also expected to present their work at THIS IS HONORS in the spring semester.

The National and International Scholarship Office (NISO) is a great resource for students to use in researching and applying for scholarships and grants such as the Fulbright, Rhodes, or Gates/Cambridge scholarships. It is there to help you and support you with the practical information you need in order to develop a competitive strategy to pursue these awards. The office is located in University Hall 1848. Please contact Kathleen Harris and visit the NISO website for more information.
