2012-2013 HONORS PROGRAM APPLICATION

Along with the questions below, you will need to attach two (2) essays. Neither essay should exceed 500 words. Please submit the essays in Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF format.

You will also need one non-academic letter of recommendation (written by someone other than your teacher, i.e. coach, mentor, co-worker), which may be mailed, faxed or emailed to the

    Honors Advisory Council
    University Honors Program
Loyola Marymount University, 1 LMU Drive, Suite 4400
    Los Angeles, CA  90045
    Email: honors@lmu.edu

The letter of recommendation may be set on its own as long as the applicant's first and last name is clearly identified on the letter. You may submit more and varied letters of recommendation if you like; however, only one non-academic letter is required.

For your application to be considered complete by each stated deadline, it must contain all of the  information and materials requested by the deadline. This includes the letter of recommendation.  Incomplete applications will be considered in a subsequent round if the file becomes complete.

Essay #1 (College/School)
Please respond to the prompt associated with the college or school to which you applied and/or were admitted:

(Business)

In the mid-1980s, the famous financier Ivan Boesky said to a group of business students, "Greed is all right by the way: I want you to know that I think that greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself." Does "greed" have a proper role in business? If so, what? If not, why not? Do you think it played a role in the recent economic meltdown? How should this human drive be managed in business so that we get more of the positive and less of the negative?

(Communications and Fine Arts)

Communication can be used, as a medium, in various ways, to address the most pressing issues of the 21st Century. Communication through the arts, dance, and the rhetorical arts impact audiences in ways that create new understandings and social realities. How can your particular emphasis (e.g., dance, theatre, communication studies) be used to create new cultural understandings? What message should your emphasis give?  How would that message be communicated?

(Film and Television)

Pitch a film/TV show/screenplay/album that you want to produce or have already produced. How does this work inform, enlighten and entertain the audience? How does this work fit contextually with others in the same genre?

(Liberal Arts)

What is the value of the humanities in a time of economic crisis? More generally, in what way(s) do the humanities help us survive in difficult times?

(Science and Engineering)

Albert Einstein once said: "God always takes the simplest way." What do you think he meant by that as a guide to doing science?

Essay #2 (Current Events)
Please write an intellectually interesting essay on an issue or problem addressed recently in the news. What would your solution to that issue or problem be? Why would such a solution be preferable to other possibilities?
