Theological Studies
Significant theological discourse, research and study at Loyola Marymount can be found in the department of Theological Studies in Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. The department of Theological Studies teaches theology and investigates the broader area of theological thought and experience. The department offers baccalaureate and graduate students an opportunity to study in several areas, including biblical, historical, systematic, and moral theology, comparative theology, and pastoral ministry with special emphasis on the Roman Catholic theological tradition. The lay ministry and pastoral theology programs include an additional ministry and counseling emphasis in addition to foundational courses in theology. The strengths and uniqueness of this program lie in the faculty and student body concern for global and cross-cultural theological studies, with a special emphasis on the Roman Catholic tradition.
This opportunity for study is also made available to continuing education students through the Center for Religion and Spirituality.
Each semester, graduate courses in the department of Theological Studies are available for audit through the Center. Students auditing (referred to as “auditors”) have the opportunity to observe and participate in a graduate level theology course. Auditors are expected to attend courses they enroll in, and are required to actively participate in seminar (non-lecture) classes. However, as no grade or course credit is awarded, auditors are not required to complete the course assignments as set by the instructor (i.e. submit research papers, give presentations, etc).
Graduate school requires a deeper commitment to study and research than some continuing education programs. Thus, prospective students are required to submit an application to audit before they can be permitted to enroll in any course. If your application is accepted by the course instructor, you will be contacted by LMU Extension and enrolled in the course.
Tuition for auditors is $370.00 per course. Additional book and/or lab fees may be incurred. Courses are semester long (15 weeks) and traditionally meet once a week in the evenings (this may vary depending on the course). Please contact the Center at 310.338.2799 with any further questions. Registration will be opening soon.
