El III Seminario regional de verano sobre la formación para el ministerio hispano se celebró en el en el centro Pastoral de la Diócesis de Las Vegas desde el domingo 08 hasta el miércoles 11 de agosto de 2011.

2010 Regional Summer Seminar Report
From August 8 to August 11, 2010, the third Regional Summer Seminar on Formation for Hispanic Ministry was held at the Pastoral Center of the Diocese of Las Vegas. We had the participation of representatives from institutions, diocesan offices, universities and independent institutes all of which serve, though not exclusively, the Hispanic Catholic community of California and Nevada.
The Steering Committee had prepared a process for the group to follow during the Seminar; the process was based on the deliberations of the two previous workshops. During the last session of the 2009 Seminar, the assembly identified thirteen activities related to the formation of Hispanic Catholics in our region. Out of these thirteen activities, the assembly selected five for further reflection and possible collaborative efforts:
- To meet the training needs of groups in the Hispanic community of the region
- Create regional formation standards that respond to the reality of the Hispanic Catholic community
- Include the social dimension in all stages of ministry formation
- Caring for Hispanic youth, especially the generations of Hispanics born in the United States
- Define the scope of the term "education" and "formation," and what we can do from our own areas of expertise on behalf of the Hispanic Catholic community in California and Nevada.
The 2010 Seminar served to establish a foundation that gives unity to all of these various topics of study, and in doing so illuminated what is meant by the term "Pastoral de Conjunto." The opening session was facilitated by Rudy Vargas, Director of the Northeast Hispanic Catholic Center. He placed emphasis on the meaning of the unity of the Church’s “being” and “doing” (el ser y hacer) that makes the Church both a communion and a community. He also helped the group to understand the different strengths, abilities, and interests of organizations and communities which need to be taken into account when we do "pastoral de conjunto." In addition to the “pastoral de conjunto” topic, we wanted to deepen our understanding of ministry formation for US-born Hispanics. For this topic, we invited Ken Johnson-Mondragón to make a presentation on the subject and facilitate a process of reflection. Johnson-Mondragón peppered his presentation with statistics, but what especially caught the attention of the assembly was the dramatic rate which US-born Hispanics leave the Catholic Church when compared with other groups of Hispanics.
The assembly met in smaller groups to further discuss various ways to care for Hispanics born in the United States. The resources available were an important issue of this aspect of pastoral care. Each group focused on a specific topic: family, school, leadership in the Church, and what we understand as the educational needs that are specific to this group.
The last topic of discussion concerned how to continue the work done at the Seminar. The question posed to the assembly was what are the future directions for continuing this conversation? The assembly decided that further reflection on the topics discussed is needed. More concretely, the idea of conducting a study to make explicit the process of call and of formation as experienced by Hispanic Catholics was adopted--a study on the ways of “being” and the ways of “doing” (el ser y el hacer) among Hispanic Catholic ministers of the region. The group understood that there are a variety of leaders and ministers in different areas of the Church, both in the apostolic movements and in parishes and dioceses. The aim of the study would be to identify from experience and from theological reflection what a Hispanic pastoral minister of this region is and what he or she does. How is one’s ministry a response to his or her baptismal vocation?
The meeting entrusted the coordination of this study, the committee will also define more clearly the scope of this study and how to seek funding. They also agreed to continue with a fourth Regional Summer Seminar 2011, and suggested that the best date would be the first week of August 2011. We hope this date does not conflict with other national or local events that would prevent the participation of stakeholders and, if possible, the participation of some of the bishops of the region.
Significant achievements of the Seminar:
Over the past three years, a group of highly trained representatives has been coming together from all fourteen (arch)dioceses of California and Nevada, four Catholic universities, and several independent institutions. The spirit of collaboration has been constructive, and many of them have expressed approval of these regional cooperation efforts. At this year’s Seminario, the evaluation of content, dynamics, and leadership by the participants was very positive and encouraging.
We were fortunate to have the presence of Claire Boost and Carlos de la Rosa of the Porticus Foundation (formerly Humanities), an organization that has shown much interest in supporting this project financially, and to support future projects that benefit the Hispanic Catholic community.
The pastoral reflection of the Seminar was rich with new ideas and concepts on how to improve on the history Hispanic Catholic ministry. The presentations given by the keynote speakers were excellent, as was the dialogue that sprung from the presentation by Rudy Vargas. We would like to emphasize the importance of carrying on clear communication about collaborative efforts between various diocesan offices and other pastoral agencies; how collaboration takes place between formation programs has an effect on the ministry candidates themselves and on the process of formation for ministry in general in the region.
The pastoral theme of second and third generation Hispanics resonated among the participants, especially the statistics that shows the high level of departure from institutionalized forms of religious affiliation among Hispanic youth.
The support of the bishops for the Seminario is highly valued and trusted. We know that this support will guarantee a real “pastoral de conjunto” in California and Nevada.
Informe sobre el Seminario de Verano 2010 con los directores de programas de formación
Del día domingo 8 al miércoles 11 de agosto se celebró en el centro Pastoral de la Diócesis de Las Vegas el Tercer Seminario regional de verano sobre la formación para el ministerio hispano. Contamos con la participación de representantes de Institutos y oficinas diocesanas, Universidades e Instituciones independientes de formación que sirven aunque no exclusivamente a la comunidad hispana de California y Nevada.
El procedimiento que seguimos durante el seminario estuvo orientado por el documento de trabajo que el comité organizador preparó basado en los aportes de los dos seminarios anteriores. Durante la última sesión del Seminario 2009 la asamblea identificó trece acciones relacionadas con la formación de los Hispanos en nuestra región para ser trabajadas en las siguientes asambleas. De esas trece acciones en esta sesión la asamblea seleccionó 5 de ellas para continuar la reflexión y los esfuerzos de colaboración: 1) Responder a las necesidades de formación de los grupos que conforman la comunidad hispana en esta región; 2) Trabajar en los estándares de formación regionales que realmente respondan a la realidad; 3) Incluir la dimensión social en todas las etapas de la formación; 4) Atender a la juventud hispana, especialmente las generaciones de hispanos nacidos en USA; 5) Definir los alcances de lo que entendemos bajo el término “educación” y “formación” y lo que de hecho podemos hacer desde nuestros propios ámbitos de trabajo a favor de la comunidad hispana católica de California y Nevada.
Con el fin de encontrar un fundamento que diera unidad a los diversos temas de estudio, dedicamos la primera sesión del Seminario 2010 al estudio de lo que entendemos por “Pastoral de Conjunto”. Para facilitar la reflexión contamos con la Participación de Rudy Vargas, Director del Northeast Hispanic Catholic Center. El nos ofreció una iluminación centrada en el sentido de comunión-comunidad en el ser y el hacer de la Iglesia, pero además nos ayudó a entender las diferentes fuerzas, capacidades e intereses al interior mismo de organizaciones y comunidades que deben tomarse en cuenta cuando buscamos colaborar y hacer “pastoral de conjunto”. Además de la Pastoral de Conjunto consideramos que debíamos profundizar en este seminario 2010 en el asunto de la formación de los hispanos nacidos en US. Para este fin invitamos a Ken Johnson-Mondragon a hacer una presentación del tema y a facilitar el proceso de reflexión sobre el mismo. Ken Johnson-Mondragón nos ofreció diversas estadísticas sobre el tema pero captó especialmente la atención de la asamblea el hecho de que es en este grupo específico donde se nota más la deserción de la Iglesia católica si lo comparamos con otros grupos de la población hispana.
La asamblea dialogó en pequeños grupos sobre las formas de atención a hispanos nacidos en USA y los medios para compartir recursos entre las diócesis sobre este aspecto de la pastoral. Cada grupo centró su atención en los agentes implicados en este tema: la familia, la escuela, el liderazgo en la Iglesia y una cuarta mesa estudió lo que entendemos cuando hablamos de educación en este grupo específico.
El ultimo tema de diálogo en la asamblea fue sobre la continuidad de este proceso. Frente a la pregunta ¿hacia donde queremos continuar la conversación? La asamblea decidió que además de continuar la reflexión sobre los temas ahora abordados queremos encontrar un punto que fundamente el trabajo de la formación, y decidió que hagamos un estudio sobre el ser y el hacer del ministro hispano en esta región del país. Comprobamos que hay una enorme variedad de líderes y ministros en diferentes ámbitos de la Iglesia, tanto en los movimientos apostólicos como en las parroquias y en las diócesis. El objetivo del estudio sería identificar desde la experiencia y desde la reflexión teológica lo que es y lo que hace un ministro en la pastoral hispana en esta región. ¿Cómo es su ministerio una respuesta a su vocación bautismal?
La asamblea confió al comité la coordinación de este esfuerzo, la tarea de definir con más claridad los alcances de este estudio y buscar la financiación del mismo. Todos estuvieron también de acuerdo en continuar con el Cuatro Seminario de Verano 2011 y sugirieron como la mejor fecha la primera semana de agosto 2011 si es que no entra en conflicto con otros eventos nacionales o locales que impidan la participación de los interesados y de ser posible de alguno de los obispos de la Región.
Aspectos a resaltar en este Seminario
En los tres años del Seminario, se ha ido conformando un grupo muy representativo de las diferentes estructuras de formación de hispanos en la región once que incluye a todas las (arqui)diócesis, cuatro universidades católicas y algunos institutos independientes. El espíritu de colaboración ha sido autentica y la mayoría de ellos han expresado su aprobación de estos esfuerzos de colaboración regional. En cuanto al tercer Seminario, la evaluación del evento por parte de los participantes fue altamente positiva tanto en la dinámica, en los contenidos como en el liderazgo del grupo.
Contamos con la presencia de Claire Boost y de Carlos de la Rosa de la Fundación Porticus (antes Humanitas) quienes han mostrado mucho interés en apoyar económicamente este proyecto y en apoyar otros proyectos en beneficio de la comunidad hispana católica.
La reflexión sobre la pastoral de conjunto fue muy iluminadora pues le puso carne a un concepto central en la historia del ministerio hispano. Lo valioso de ese tema no fue solamente la presentación de Rudy Vargas, sino el diálogo en la asamblea que enriqueció la misma presentación. Especialmente podemos resaltar la importancia de tener claridad en el modo como tratamos de unir esfuerzos de las diferentes oficinas diocesanas y los otros agentes de la pastoral en mejor la formación para el liderazgo entre los hispanos de esta región.
El tema de la pastoral con la segunda y tercera generación de hispanos también encontró mucho eco entre los participantes, especialmente desde la llamada de atención que las estadísticas muestran respecto a la deserción de las formas institucionalizadas de pertenencia religiosa de los jóvenes de ese grupo de hispanos.
El apoyo de los obispos a esta iniciativa ha sido muy valorado y todos y confiaron e que este apoyo seguirá para seguir este esfuerzo real de pastoral de conjunto en California.
