Catholic Bible Institute of San Bernardino

NEXT COHORT BEGINS SEPTEMBER 2010.   The Catholic Bible Institute for the Diocese of San Bernardino is a three-year program which involves a comprehensive study of Hebrew and Christian Scriptures, with particular focus on methods of study, sharing and praying with scripture, and application of skills in bible-study leadership.

Courses will meet one Saturday per month from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., during the Fall and Spring academic terms (semesters), at the Pastoral Center of the Diocese of San Bernardino, 1201 E. Highland Avenue, San Bernardino or Christ the Redeemer, 12745 Oriole Avenue, Grand Terrace.  The program runs five semesters (2.5 academic years).  Tuition is $195 per semester (Years I and II have two semesters each, and Year III consists of a single semester).  Schedules and tuition are subject to change. Those seeking personal enrichment are encouraged in their studies through participation with those seeking certification.
  Students may enroll in the program at audit (non-certificate) status.  Space is limited however, as priority is given to those seeking certification. 


Registration

Registration for certifcation and enrichment (audit) is open to the men and women of the Diocese of San Bernardino.  Submit an enrollment form for the program via direct mail, or contact LMU Extension at 310.338.1971 to handle your enrollment over the phone. 



SCHEDULE

Year I

Year 1 Fall and Spring semesters include an introduction to the Old Testament and an overview of the following themes: Exodus, Covenant, Primeval History, Patriarchs, Prophets, Historical Writings, Deutero-canonical Writings, Exile and Rebuilding, Wisdom Literature and Hebrew theology.

Year II

Year 2 Fall and Spring semesters include an introduction to the New Testament, and an overview of the following: Mark, Matthew, Luke, Acts, John, Pauline theology, Pastoral letters, the Book of Revelation, and New Testament theology.

Year III

Year 3 (Fall, with a final session held during the spring) semester is a practicum term for those in the certificate program. The focus is on developing skills for working with scripture in group situations at a parish level, with particular attention devoted to adult learning styles and skills. Participants demonstrate their leadership skills through a supervised presentation of a scripture program using the knowledge, skills, and tools acquired in the Bible Institute.



INSTRUCTORS

Reverend Felix Just, S.J., Ph.D., Director of Biblical Education at the Loyola Institute of Spirituality in Orange, Calif., received an S.T.L. in Scripture from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley and a Ph.D. from Yale University in New Testament Studies. He gives many public lectures on Biblical and liturgical topics, is an instructor in the Catholic Bible Institute, and maintains an extensive website devoted to the New Testament and the Roman Catholic Lectionary for Mass.

Daniel L. Smith-Christopher, D.Phil., Professor of Theological Studies, has taught Old Testament at Loyola Marymount University since 1989. A frequent teacher and speaker in Adult Education in many Ecumenical contexts, he is the author of dozens of scholarly articles and nine major books, including his most recent, Jonah, Jesus, and Other Good Coyotes (Abingdon Press, 2007). Smith-Christopher, raised a Quaker, completed his B.A. at George Fox University in his native Oregon, and then studied at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (M.Div.). He completed his Ph.D. at Oxford University in England before living in Israel/Palestine for two years as a volunteer Peace Worker with the British Quakers.
