Catholic Bible Institute
The Catholic Bible Institute is a three-year program which entails a comprehensive study of the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures focusing on methods of study, sharing and praying with Scripture. The purpose of the Institute is to provide for the training and formation of leadership at the local parish. To further this purpose, the fourfold goal of the Institute is to enable participants to grow in appreciation of God's revealed word, to foster a Catholic understanding of the study of Sacred Scripture, to integrate bible study with prayer and Christian living, and to provide formation and training in basic Catholic bible-study principles.
The program of studies for the Catholic Bible Institute is cyclical, starting with a year of studies focusing on the Old Testament, then a year of studies on the New Testament and a final year of both studies and practicum focusing on particular skills for working with adults and running a parish-based bible study program. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be awarded a certificate in Bible Study Leadership.
Who Should Participate
Those who are in ministry, education, or simply seek to foster their own spiritual growth and broaden their own understanding of Scripture, will find participation in the Catholic Bible Institute to be a richly rewarding experience.
While priority is given to those seeking the certificate in Bible Study Leadership, we also encourage and welcome participants who seek personal enrichment and education. The Catholic Bible Institute of Los Angeles is faciliated by the
Office for Religious Education of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. For information and registration, contact the Office directly at 213.637.7654 or visit www.la-archdiocese.org online.

The Institutes are experiential learning opportunities. A team of facilitators utilizes a variety of instruction methods appropriate to adult learning. Year One includes an introduction to the Old Testament and an overview of the following themes: Exodus, Covenant, Primeval History, Patriarchs, Prophets, Historical Writings, Deuterocanonical Writings, Exile and Rebuilding, Wisdom Literature and Hebrew theology.
Year Two includes an introduction to the New Testament, and an overview of the following: Mark, Matthew, Luke, Acts, John, Pauline theology, Pastoral letters, the Book of Revelation, and New Testament theology.
Year Three is a practicum year for those in the certificate program. The focus is on developing skills for working with Scripture in group situations at a parish level, with particular attention devoted to adult learning styles and skills.
