LMU Extension at Loyola Marymount University is offering comprehensive medical certification choices especially suitable for a person who is pursuing a sudden or strategic career change and looking for a demand field with a quick training interval. These certificates are appropriate for people who are new to the medical profession and the fees include all learning materials and in-class lab experiences.

Medical Terminology Certificate
20 hours
This program is good as a standalone certification or as a preparatory course for one of the other certificates below, offering a comprehensive guide to medical terms. The class includes identifying, analyzing and understanding the basic word structure, root words, suffixes, and prefixes of medical terminology. In just three weeks, the student completes an overview of the organization of the human body and the associated systems, major drug classifications, diagnostic tests and treatment procedures, medical abbreviations, and symbols and common medical terms. Medical Administrative Assistant Certificate
50 hours
This course prepares the student to function effectively in administrative and clerical positions in the health-care industry, such as Administrative Medical Assistant, Medical Secretary, Medical Records Clerk, and Health Unit Coordinator which all are in great demand. The program covers insurance billing and coding, medical ethics, customer service and legal aspects of the field. EKG Technician Certificate

This comprehensive Certification Program prepares students, even those new to the medical field, to function immediately as EKG Technicians and to take the ASPT–Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam or any other national certification test. Students practice with equipment and work in a hands-on lab setting. Course includes practice and background information on anatomy of the heart, physiology, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects, patient contact, laboratory assisting, electrocardiography and echocardiography. Pharmacy Technician Certificate
50 hours
This comprehensive course prepares students to enter the burgeoning pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s exam. Pharmacy technicians work in pharmacies under the direction of a pharmacist. Their main responsibility is filling prescriptions according to doctors' orders including the retrieval of drugs in the correct dosage form and strength, measurement of the appropriate amount of drug, and producing the prescription's label. Medical Billing & Coding Certificate
70 hours
This course combining billing and coding offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, manually file claims, complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims, and use generic forms to streamline billing. It covers specialty fields such as surgery, radiology and laboratory, how to find the services and codes using a manual, and prepares the student to work in the field. After completing this certificate and achieving six months’ experience, a student can request to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders’ Certified Professional Coder Exam (the CPC or CPC-H Apprentice), or the American Health Information Association’s Certified Coding Associate exam. Home Health Aide Certificate
80 hours
Home health-care aides assist patients in their homes by focusing on specific health and personal needs. This certificate which can be completed within three months emphasizes personal care, home management, communications, working with ill persons, nutrition and special diets and eldercare. Aides with this training can work in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, and long-term or assisted-living facilities after a relatively short, comprehensive training which also prepares the student for the National Association for Home Care & Hospice’s examination. Veterinary Assistant Certificate
100 hours
This program introduces students to the fast-growing field of veterinary medicine. Students learn about the care of animals, how to recognize signs of illness and disease, and how to assist a veterinarian with exams. This course also covers skills to run a front office such as interaction with clients and animals, interpersonal communication tips, accounts payable, banking, and working with collections.
