Experiencing the Italian Renaissance (mandatory)

This is an art historical survey of Italian Renaissance art and architecture, including developing an understanding of the social, religious and political conditions that inspired the “Rebirth.” Students will visit important sites and monuments with local art historians as part of their studies.

Drawing I
Lecturer: Will Pupa
This course is an introduction to drawing and the use of sketchbooks to record one’s travels. Instruction of fundamental drawing techniques is provided to enable the student to draw from observation. Experimentation and exploration of technique is developed by drawing a variety of subjects, including on-site observation of art, architecture and the Tuscan landscape.

Bookmaking

This course will explore the book as an original object of art and the artistic varieties of handcrafted books. Students will create accordion books, works made from various types of hand-sewn bindings, scroll-based books and works made from found objects. Attention will be given to the history of book arts, various artists and movements in the 20th century that have embraced book arts, and the role of the self-published book in activism, creative expression and the ability to communicate.
