Bonn.Moscow.Banner

Program Description

The Theater Arts Program offers a combination of courses that focus on theatre in the European context – in particular, the acting styles of Constantin Stanislavski and Bertolt Brecht, and the more conceptual deconstructionalist post-modern European design styles. This program is open to all theatre majors and minors with emphasis either in performance, technical/production or design. Taught by European theatre experts and LMU faculty in the LMU tradition, students will benefit from a conservatory-style course format, which includes in-depth theoretical and intense practical approaches to Stanislavski and Brechtian acting methods.

LMU Theatre Arts students begin their studies in Bonn at the Akademie für Internationale Bildung and then travel to Moscow for nearly a month to study with master acting teachers at the acclaimed Moscow Art Theatre.  Students then return to Germany to begin rehearsals for a full production to be performed at a professional theatre in Bonn.  Students may earn 15 to 21 units of coursework and will participate in a 0-to-3 unit German language and culture class, which will help them gain an understanding of this diverse society.

Location

Bonn, Berlin and Moscow are the perfect cities for students to study theatre arts.  Bonn offers a variety of theatres such as Schauspielhaus, the Lampenlager, Theatre am Ballsaal and the Bonn Opera House, where one can experience drama, comedy and musicals year-round. Bonn and Berlin are ideal to explore the richness of a different culture, to experience a plethora of theatre arts performances and to train in the epic acting style of Brecht.  Moscow is the perfect base for acting students to discover the rich culture of Russian theatre, to develop their acting methods in the system developed by Stanislavski and to walk the halls where Anton Chekhov premiered his famous plays.
