Program Description
Sogang Universityhas exchange agreements with over 154 institutions around the world. Semester or year exchange program is available to students from institutions with exchange agreements. Students pay the tuition to the home institution and are responsible for housing, travel, and personal expenses. With many courses now taught in English, exchange students can find enough courses they can take. This semester, about 20% of the courses are taught in English. In some disciplines, such as economics or business, the percentage is about 30%. As the new English language requirement for our students is phased in; this percentage should go up to about 35% in the next two or three years. Korean language proficiency is not needed; many of our incoming exchange students arrive with absolutely no knowledge of Korean. Students will be placed in our new on-campus facility with other South Korean students. All exchange students can take a Korean language course at our Korean Language Education Center free of charge, which normally costs $1,500 for a 10-week course. A typical exchange student takes the Korean language course and several courses in their subjects (taught in English). Throughout the course of the exchange program, many activities will be planned for students to experience the Korean culture and Sogang. (http://goabroad.sogang.ac.kr)
An internship experience at Sogang (http://swes.sogang.ac.kr) might be available. Sogang’s School of Economics and School of Business Administration combined to create this program. An interested student should apply for this program when she/he applies for an exchange study. After a semester of exchange study, the two Schools would arrange for an internship with one of the major South Korean companies, such as Samsung, LG, or Hyundai during the following vacation period. In addition, the student will get a $2,000 scholarship, which can be used for travel or living expenses. The only requirement is that the student must take at least one course in Economics and one in Business while is studying at Sogang.
Korean Language Education Center(http://klec.sogang.ac.kr/): The Korean Language Education Center is one of the best in the business. It developed the first ‘new generation’ textbooks that emphasize communication skills rather than grammars. Several universities in the States (e.g. Penn State) use our textbook in their Korean language courses. Exchange students can enroll in a Korean language class free of charge as I explained above. For students who are serious about learning the Korean language, there are four 10-week modules year.
Location
Located along the Han River, Seoul has grown into a teeming metropolis with a population of more than 11 million. Over the years, the capital city of Korea has greatly expanded in the process of urbanization and industrialization and continues to grow as the thriving center of the country's political, economic, cultural and educational activities. Seoul hosted the Olympic Games in the summer of 1988 and the FIFA World Cup in 2002.
As the world's 10th-largest city and one of the oldest cities in South Korea, its past and present coexist in a fascinating way: centuries-old palaces, city gates, shrines, gardens and priceless art collections attest to the city's illustrious past, while the glistening facades of soaring skyscrapers and the bustling traffic represent its vibrant present.
Seoul’s location on the Korean peninsula provides many opportunities to visit nearby countries of China and Japan.
