Supplemental Insurance
SUPPLEMENTAL INSURANCE
FOR STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS
Students participating in a Study Abroad program are required to have accident and sickness insurance coverage prior to their departure. If a student is currently covered by their parents' insurance, it is important to verify that the health coverage is adequate and will cover the student while overseas. If it does not adequately cover all needs, a student must purchase another policy or supplemental insurance. Students many times ask what "adequate" insurance entails. Following are LMU’s guidelines to determine adequate accident and sickness insurance:
- Coverage for accidents or urgent illness incurred outside of the U.S.
- Coverage for minor sickness treatments incurred outside of the U.S.
- Coverage equal to or greater than $50,000 for each accident/illness
- Emergency evacuation insurance, for expenses incurred through medically assisted evacuation to the closest medical facility or for return to the U.S. or your country of domicile
Check with the insurance carrier for instructions on how to file a claim should medical care be necessary while abroad. (Students may considering taking some claim forms with them abroad.) In most cases, students must pay out-of-pocket for their medical treatment while abroad and then apply to the insurance company for reimbursement. It is a good idea to carry a major, internationally recognized credit card for this purpose. Students need to carry an insurance I.D. card or some other evidence which shows coverage while abroad. Be sure to take the name and phone number of the insurance company, in case questions arise.
