What is the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)?
The NSSE is a national survey that addresses various aspects of the college experience, including how students spend their free time, what they have gained from classes, and their interaction with faculty and other students. The survey began in 2000 and is administered annually nationwide by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research. Hundreds of four-year colleges and universities participate in the survey every year.
Who participates in the NSSE?
All LMU freshmen and seniors have been invited to participate in the NSSE. Freshmen and seniors at various other colleges and universities have also been invited to participate. A total of 1,493 colleges and universities, and more than 2.7 million students have participated in the NSSE since 2000.
Where can I find the link to the survey?
LMU freshmen and seniors were sent individualized links to the survey. Students should check their Lion e-mails for their link. Eligible students can also visit www.nssesurvey.org to request their unique login information.
What incentives are being offered for participating in the NSSE?
In appreciation for participating, every LMU freshmen and senior who completes the survey will be entered each week into a drawing for one of two $50 Amazon gift cards. Through April 27, a total of 16 gift cards will be awarded.
Why is LMU participating in the NSSE?
The NSSE is an important survey for LMU because it enables us to assess the extent to which we are providing our students with the educational experiences necessary to achieve our university learning outcomes by the time they graduate. It also provides us with essential information for our upcoming reaccreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
The questions in the NSSE are built around key benchmarks of effective educational practice. These practices have been shown to be good indicators of a student’s learning and personal development. These key benchmarks include:
- Level of academic challenge
- Active and collaborative learning
- Student-faculty interaction
- Supportive campus environment
- Enriching educational experiences
Because the NSSE is a national survey, we will also be able to compare the experience of LMU students to the experience of students across the nation and at other Jesuit colleges and universities participating in the NSSE. All of this information will enable us to make any necessary improvements to the undergraduate program and will enhance our students overall educational experience at LMU.
Where can I get more information?
More information about the NSSE is available on the NSSE website.
For information regarding the administration of the NSSE on the LMU campus, please contact Christine Chavez, Manager of Surveys and Evaluation, at Christine.Chavez@lmu.edu or Ext. 86691.
