IV.     COMMITTEES OF THE UNIVERSITY

The vitality and effectiveness of the committees listed below depend upon how often and to what extent they are used by all members of the University Community. Unless specifically noted to the contrary, membership on the committees includes both faculty and student representation. Faculty appointments to standing committees are made by the President through the Academic Vice President upon the recommendation of the Faculty Senate. Student appointments are made by the Executive Board of the Associated Students of LMU. Each of the committees has statutes on file with the office of the President. These statutes spell out specific committee activities in detail. The following committee descriptions are summaries only and are not exhaustive of a committee's authority or scope of responsibility.

In addition to the regular standing committees, there are committees and subcommittees of the Board of Trustees, each one of which includes a faculty representative. These subcommittees include: Executive, Academic Affairs, Audit, Facilities Planning, Finance, Endowment Fund Investment, Legal, Student Life, University Relations, or any other committee duly struck by the Board.

A.      UNIVERSITY STANDING COMMITTEES

1.         Academic Planning and Review (APRC)

This committee advises the Academic Vice President on matters concerning undergraduate and graduate planning and review of academic programs. Membership is limited to the faculty.

2.         Committee on Excellence in Teaching

It is the responsibility of this committee to encourage and stimulate excellent teaching among the faculty by promoting policies and programs that recognize and reward excellence in teaching within the University. Membership is limited to the faculty.

3.         Frank Sullivan Social Justice Committee

The purpose of this committee is to advise the President and the Office of Campus Ministry on all aspects of the promotion of social justice and concern in the University.

4.         Committee on the Library

This committee directly assists and advises the University Librarian in all matters of library policy and in the preparation of the annual library budget. It advises the University Librarian in the review of the operations and services of the Library, the InstructionalMediaCenter, and the LearningResourceCenter.

5.         Multicultural Affairs Committee

This committee advises the President and University community about issues related to multicultural affairs.

6.         President's Committeeon Diversity

The purpose of this committee is to promote dialogue, policies and programs that foster diversity within the framework of the University's Catholic tradition, and to assist in the development and implementation of programs to recruit, retain, and advance a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, administrators and trustees.

7.         Committee on Rank and Tenure

This committee studies and makes recommendations concerning promotion to tenure and/or advancement in rank of members of the faculty. It reviews recommendations made by departmental chairpersons and Deans and submits its own recommendations to the President through the Academic Vice President. Membership is limited to tenured, full professors.

8.         Committee on Research

It is the function of this committee to make recommendations concerning policies which will insure qualitative and quantitative expansion of all University activities which seek to broaden the frontiers of knowledge. Review of research proposals and the recommendation for the awarding of faculty research grants are major responsibilities of this committee. Membership is limited to faculty.

9.         Sabbatical Review Committee

The purpose of this committee is to recommend for approval the proposed sabbatical projects of faculty applicants~ upon the faculty member's return from leave, the committee reviews completed projects and makes recommendations regarding their acceptance to the Academic Vice President. Membership is limited to faculty.

10.        Committee on Sexual Harassment

It is the responsibility of this committee to educate the Loyola Marymount community about the problem of sexual harassment and ways to prevent it.

11.        Committee on the Status of Women

The purposes of this committee are to advise the President and University community on issues affecting the current status of women on campus, and to advise on the implementation of Title IX regulations.

12.        Committee on Student Affairs

This committee is directly responsible to the President of the University through the Vice President for Student Affairs. Its functions are to advise the Vice President for Student Affairs regarding the non-academic areas of student life, including supervision of student communication media.

13.        Westchester Campus Budget Committee

It is the responsibility of this committee to advise the President in the review, modification, and approval of all budgets for the Westchester Campus.

B.      COMMITTEES OF THE FACULTY SENATE

1.         Committee on the Economic Status of the Faculty (ESOF)

This committee recommends and is responsible to the Faculty Senate on matters concerning salaries and others areas of economic and related concerns of the faculty. The committee members are named by the Executive Board of the Faculty Senate. Membership is limited to the faculty.

2.         Committee on Ethnic Minority Faculty Affairs

This committee endeavors to create a faculty on campus that reflects more closely the ethnic diversity" now existing in greater Los Angeles, and to assist in providing a multiracial, multicultural environment in which all faculty ~ill feel welcome, and will be a part of the University community. Membership is limited to the faculty.

3.         Grievance Committee

This committee is elected by the Faculty Senate and is charged with responding to faculty grievances. Membership is limited to full-time faculty. This committee operates in accordance with its statutes and the current edition of the Faculty Handbook.

C.      SPECIAL COMMITTEES

1.         Academic Computing Committee

The purpose of this committee is to recommend and review plans, policies and resources for computing at the University in order to ensure that the computing resources are adequate to support academic excellence and advances in technology.

2.         Athletic Advisory Board

This committee, through the Vice President for Student Affairs, advises the President on major policy matters regarding athletic activities. It reviews the budget assigned to intercollegiate and intramural athletics, supervises its proper administration and makes recommendations in this area as deemed necessary. This committee is responsible for the establishment and enforcement of rules and regulations governing participation in athletics.

3.         Campus Facilities and Environmental Committee

It is the responsibility of this committee, which reports to the Associate Vice President of Business Affairs, to analyze, evaluate, and recommend priorities for the annual capital budget expenditure, and to review requests for major facilities and ground renovations, repairs and improvements.

4.         Core Curriculum Committee

The responsibility of this committee is to ensure an ongoing review of core curriculum subject areas, course offerings and overall core structure. Membership is limited to the faculty.

5.         Disabled Student Services Advisory Committee

The responsibility of this committee is to educate the University community about the challenges faced by learning and physically disabled Loyola Marymount students as well as to devise ways of meeting the needs of the disabled student population.

6.         Human Subjects Review Board

The function of this board is to review all human research conducted by Loyola Marymount faculty and students and by researchers conducting studies with human participants at this institution. The focus of the review process is the ethics of each research project and specifically the ethical treatment of human subjects.

7.         Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

This federally mandated committee ensures the humane use of sentient animals in teaching and research activities on campus. The committee inspects University animal facilities, reviews all animal research protocols, reviews annual progress reports for all ongoing research activities on campus, and ensures that all licenses and certifications are maintained and that the University remains in compliance with all appropriate federal requirements.
