Jamaica (Spring Break Trip)

Partners in Cultural Understanding, Faith, and Love

February 25 - March 4, 2012

Student will engage in international service work on the island of Jamaica in the Caribbean. This program is designed to give LMU students an exposure to another culture, working with those of the greatest need. To this end, participants will provide support and assistance to the residents and staff of various placement sights in Kingston, Jamaica – a city rich in culture and history. Specifically, volunteers will work with the elderly, the young, and other disadvantaged populations. Sites will likely include visiting a home for the elderly and homeless run by Mother Theresa’s Missionaries of Charity, working at St. Margaret’s community center that caters to schooling at-risk children, and providing care to the elderly and victims of Hanson’s disease (leprosy) at St. Monica’s Home located on the outskirts of Kingston near a Spanish community. In addition to visiting these service sites, Jamaican natives will spend a considerable amount of time educating participants on Jamaican culture and history.

Campus Ministry has partnered with the Jamaica Volunteers Foundation, a non-profit agency in Kingston, Jamaica, to assist with facilitating not just the immersion, but the educational component of this experience as well. The Jamaica Volunteers Foundation has a long history of working with many other Jesuit colleges and universities across the country and they understand the importance of “a faith that does justice.” As such, a large component of the trip will also seek to engage students in deep reflection both individually and as a group. This will be accomplished through daily reflection sessions and prayer.Students will engage in international service work on the island of Jamaica in the Caribbean.
