NATIONAL WILLIAM G. MCGOWAN SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO STUDENT JOHN LUX AT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY IN LOS ANGELES
Scholar Award Includes $18,000 for 2004-2005 Academic Year

May 25, 2004 - The College of Business Administration at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles has named undergraduate student John Lux as this year's William G. McGowan Scholar, awarding him a scholarship for $18,000 to be used for the 2004-2005 academic year. The scholarship recognizes students who display leadership, academic excellence, and other exemplary qualities of character, including intellectual curiosity, a spirit of innovation, and entrepreneurial potential.

This is the third year that LMU's College of Business Administration was selected as one of 35 colleges nationwide to participate in the William G. McGowan Scholars Program. The program is based on the experience of McGowan, founder and former chairman of MCI Communications Corporation, who was able to complete his MBA at Harvard University only with the assistance of a scholarship award. A grant from the William G. McGowan Charitable Fund provides the scholarship for students entering their senior year of study.

Scholarship applicants must meet specific criteria, including a minimum grade point average of 3.0, a faculty recommendation, evidence of success in a variety of leadership roles, and the submission of an essay about the contributions of McGowan to the business world or telecommunications field.

Lux ranks academically in the upper seven percent of his class with a 3.71 GPA. He also serves in several campus organizations, including Sigma Chi Fraternity of which he is President; Order of Omega, a Greek honor society; the Business Law Society; the Theology Society; and Crimson Circle, an all-male service organization. Lux also co-hosts a weekly radio program on campus and holds a part-time job as well as an internship with a local entrepreneur.
