LMU EXTENSION ANNOUNCES FALL CLASSES
July 20, 2004 - LMU Extension
announces the following fall classes beginning in August at the
Loyola Marymount University Westchester campus:
August 26:
Yoga Philosophy Information Session
An information session, open to anyone interested in yoga
philosophy, will be held Thursday, August 26, 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. at
Loyola Marymount University, University Hall 1840. Participants
will have the opportunity to meet the instructors, hear about the
various courses offered, and discover the benefits of obtaining a
certificate in Yoga Philosophy. For more information, contact

August 30:
Chamber Orchestra
Instruction in orchestral music will be offered Mondays and
Wednesdays, August 30 - December 8, from 8 - 9:30 p.m. Taught by
Frances Moore, a member of the LMU Music Department, this course
focuses on the study and performance of quality literature
representing a variety of style periods and musical genres. Tuition
is $165. Permission of the instructor is required in order to take
this class. Instrumentalists should call 310-338-5142 to arrange an
audition.
World Music Ensembles
Explore the traditional music of Ghana (West Africa) and Bali
(Indonesia) through this class, which meets Mondays and Wednesdays,
August 30 - December 8, 6 - 7:30 p.m. A hands-on approach,
including dance, is emphasized. Participants gain cultural
experience and appreciation through group performance. Tuition is
$165. The class is open to all who are interested in world music

Advanced Modern Greek
Participants in this course will refine their understanding of the
Greek language and enhance their verbal abilities. Modern Greek
literature serves as the basis for discussion and composition. A
reasonable command of Modern Greek is required. The class meets

Introduction to Modern Greek Literature
Modern Greek literature will be studied in a historical and
cultural context. Special attention will be given to the literary
creations of Kazantzakis, Cavafy, Seferis, Elytis, and Ritsos. The

New Testament Greek
This course introduces students to New Testament Greek and helps
them to comprehend the fundamentals of grammar and syntax. Students
can expect to acquire sufficient vocabulary to be able to read and
understand the New Testament and follow discussions in commentaries

Sanskrit I
This beginning course allows students to learn the Devanagari
script, correct pronunciation and essential Sanskrit grammar and
vocabulary. Students will acquire basic reading and translation
skills with Sanskrit texts and passages, selected from Yoga

History of American Catholicism
The History of American Catholicism is a dynamic look at the
people, practices, and passions of those who made up the American
Catholic church from the Spanish conquests to the Second Vatican
Council. This course will focus on major themes, particularly
mission activity, slavery, immigration, labor, and contemporary
social justice issues. The class meets Mondays, August 30 -

Introduction to Systematic Theology
This course provides graduate students with an opportunity to
reflect on the contemporary situation that forms the context of
both theological inquiry and pastoral ministry. It also provides a
survey of basic Christian doctrines and allows students to do
in-depth research into a particular theological issue. The class

Spiritual Formation in Pastoral Ministry
Students will have the opportunity to focus on cultivating a
holistic spirituality capable of balancing self- possession and
self-transcendence, contemplation and action, work and leisure,
self-care and care of others. A variety of spiritual disciplines
will be explored and experienced, with special attention given to
developing one's own personal spiritual practice. The course will
include both theoretical and experiential learning. The class meets

August 31:
Concert Choir
The large choral ensemble offers instruction in choral music with
an emphasis on vocal technique as well as the study and performance
of quality repertoire. The music represents a variety of styles,
periods, and musical genres. This semester's work culminates in the
Spring Chorale. Mary Breden, director of choral activities and
chair of LMU's Music Department teaches the class, which meets
Tuesdays, August 31 - December 14, from 7 - 10 p.m. Tuition is $45,
plus a $35 lab fee. Prior choral experience is preferred. To

Elementary Modern Greek I
Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of grammar and
syntax, oral expression, comprehension, and reading skills. During
this course, students will acquire sufficient vocabulary to be able
to understand and carry on basic conversations in Greek. The class

Intermediate Modern Greek I
This course is designed to review and complete the study of Modern
Greek grammar and syntax. A combination of reading, listening
comprehension, and class discussion allows students the chance to
improve their grasp of the language and conversational skills. The

Child Growth and Development
This course is designed for teachers, and prospective teachers, of
young children, especially those working in children's and home day
care centers in California. Students will explore human development
from conception through adolescence. The processes and theories
through which the normal human being reaches physical, social,
emotional and cognitive maturity will also be covered, and the
class meets Tuesdays, August 31 - December 7, 7:15 - 9:45 p.m.

Forming an Adult Church
Students will design a pastoral plan for enhancing adult spiritual
development in their particular setting. A couple of topics that
will be explored include: how leaders form a genuine adult faith
community; and effective practices for promoting adult spiritual
development in churches, ministry teams, and small Christian
