LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
UNIVERSITY PRESENTS A CONCERT WITH SHANTI SHANTI
February 12,
2004 – Loyola Marymount University will offer an evening
of modern spiritual music and sacred Sanskrit chanting with
distinctive musical artists, Shanti Shanti on Monday, Feb. 23,
2004, at 7:30 p.m., Seaver 100 at Loyola Marymount University. The
event is free and open to the public.
The concert, co-sponsored by LMU’s Yoga Philosophy Program
and the departments of Theological Studies and Asian and Pacific
Studies, will feature the original musical talents of Andrea and
Sara Forman. The sisters have carved a niche for themselves as
“the only Sanskrit rock group in America.” They blend
ancient Sanskrit chants with pop songs written by their father,
Robert Forman. The Bodhi Tree Review praises Shanti Shanti for
layering “Sanskrit chanting over a fusion of ancient and
modern music. Their work reveals the transcendental qualities of
Sanskrit chanting…and the transformational experiences it
releases in those who hear it.”
Andrea and Sara discovered an inexplicable gift for the Sanskrit
language and began chanting at the ages of nine and seven years,
respectively. They have been featured on PBS television programs,
radio broadcasts, and the Jay Leno Show. Shanti Shanti’s
latest album, “Dreaming in Real Time,” debuted on the
world music charts at number two.
The LMU Yoga Philosophy Program, now in its third year, is part of
the Center for Religion and Spirituality at LMU Extension. The
Shanti Shanti event is part of this semester's offerings, which
include courses on the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, Sanskrit, Tibetan
Buddhism, Kashmir Shaivism, Buddhist Meditation, the Upanishads,
the Bhagavad Gita, and the Subtle Anatomy of Yoga. All courses are
taught by university-level scholars and/or advanced practitioners
with specialized training.
