LOYOLA
MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY OFFERS LECTURES, MUSICAL EVENTS TO THE
COMMUNITY THROUGHOUT JANUARY AND FEBRUARY
January 16, 2004 – Loyola
Marymount University in Los Angeles invites the community to
various lectures and musical events throughout January and February
2004.
Senior Musicians Showcase Their Talents in Recitalist
Series
LMU’s Senior Recitalist Series continues with James Clabots
on baritone on January 24 at 4 p.m.; Jamie Cunanan, soprano, on
April 16 at 8 p.m.; Michael Grady on piano on April 18 at 4 p.m.;
Yvonne Casillas, soprano, on April 23 at 8 p.m.; Jennifer Ingraham,
soprano, on April 24 at 4 p.m.; Tizoc Estrada on guitar on April 25
at 4 p.m.; and John Pingel on cello on April 30 at 8 p.m. All
performances will be held in Murphy Recital Hall. All recitals are

Internationally-Acclaimed Musician Baruch Meir Performs at
LMU
Pianist Baruch Meir will perform a selection of classical music on
January 30 at 8 p.m. in Murphy Recital Hall. Meir’s credits
include solos and collaborative work throughout Israel, England,
France, Portugal, and the U.S. He recently performed as soloist at
the Tonjours Mozart Festival in Salzburg and at the Peabody
Conservatory in Baltimore. Tickets are $22 general admission or $15

Meir also will teach a small group lesson to interested amateur and
professional musicians on January 31 at 1 p.m. in Murphy Recital

Paul Holliday Conducts String Ensemble for Silent Film
Screening
Paul Holliday conducts the LMU String Ensemble at a film screening
on February 6 at 8 p.m. in Murphy Recital Hall. The featured film
will be the silent horror classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The
performance will include original music composed by Paul Holliday.

A Night of Drumming with Aaron Smith
Percussionist Aaron Smith will perform on February 8 at 7:30 p.m.
in Murphy Recital Hall. Smith’s performance will feature a
myriad of percussion instruments in this unique experiment with
sound. The event will showcase a variety of types of music. The

Cross Border Orchestra Performs with Opera Star Emmanuel
Lawler
One of Ireland’s top orchestras, featuring the
country’s leading tenor Emmanuel Lawler, will perform at
Sacred Heart Chapel on February 16 at 7:30 p.m. The orchestra, in
conjunction with the Sacred Heart Chapel Choirs, will perform a mix
of Broadway, American Pop/Rock, and traditional Irish music.

L.A. Religious Education Congress Extends Invitation
The L.A. Religious Education Congress invites musical liturgists to
participate in Choir 2004 for performances at upcoming liturgies.
The choir consists of two hundred members from six dioceses. This
year’s theme is Steeped in Mercy, Balm for the World.
Rehearsals will be held on February 17 and 18 in Los Angeles and

Expert Explores Desegregation in Lecture “Big Dreams,
Rural Schools”
School desegregation and the law will be discussed by author and
expert Vicki L. Ruiz on February 18 at 12 p.m. in Ahmanson
Auditorium. As part of the ongoing American Cultures Speaker
Series, Ruiz will explore the topic “Big Dreams, Rural
Schools: Mexican Americans and Public Education, 1870-1950.”

Innovative Guitarist Benjamin Verdery Performs at Murphy Recital
Hall
The fifth season of the Guitar Concert and Master Class Series
continues with a performance by acclaimed guitarist and composer
Benjamin Verdery on February 21 at 8 p.m. at Murphy Recital Hall.
Verdery is known internationally for compositions that utilize a
wide variety of instruments and people, including a basketball
player. The concert is $22 for general admission and $15 for

Verdery concludes his visit to LMU with a Master Class. The
musician will offer small group instruction to participants on
February 22 at 1 p.m. in Murphy Recital Hall. Musicians can perform

Distinguished Faculty Perform for the Public
The Department of Music will conclude the month with a faculty
recital at Murphy Recital Hall on February 28 at 8 p.m. The
