LMU EXTENSION ANNOUNCES FIRST WEEK OF FALL CLASSES

Aug. 19, 2004 – LMU Extension announces the following fall classes beginning the first week of September at the Loyola Marymount University Westchester campus:

September 1

Smart Women Finish Rich
Morris Lalezarian, a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley, teaches the financial strategies and techniques that will help you reach your financial goals. Wednesdays, Sept. 1 and Sept. 8, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Loyola Marymount University. Cost is $75 plus a $10 lab fee.

What is Hinduism?
An introduction to the history, beliefs, festivals and practices of Hinduism from its beginnings until today. Wednesdays, Sept. 1 – 29, 7:15 – 9:15 p.m. Cost is $165.  

Arabic Language and Culture I
Explores the basics of elementary Arabic through conversation. Wednesdays, Sept. 1 – Oct. 6, 7:15 – 9:15 p.m. Tuition is $165.  

Arabic Language and Culture III
Students will expand upon their knowledge of both the spoken and written Arabic language. Wednesdays, Sept. 1 – Nov. 16, 4 – 6 p.m. Tuition is $165.

Screenwriters Feature Development
Taylor Van Arsdale, an independent writer/producer and founder of Tailfish Productions, teaches the various levels of scene writing.  Wednesdays, Sept. 1 – Oct. 20, 7:15 – 9:45 p.m. Tuition is $300.

Administration and Supervision of Early Childhood Education Programs I
Topics covered include: licensing, regulations, budget preparations and analysis, personnel practices, reporting and maintaining records, and leadership skills. Designed for teachers and prospective teachers of young children, especially those working in children’s and home day care centers in California. Wednesdays, Sept. 1 – Dec. 8, 7:15 – 9:45 p.m.  Tuition is $236.

Introduction to Eastern Religions
Learn about Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism and Daoism. Normally three separate courses; this combined course is offered at a special tuition rate of $275. Wednesdays, Sept. 1 – Dec. 8, 7:15 – 9:15 p.m. 

 

September 2
Top Directors of the 20th Century
Directors such as Elia Kazan, Frederico Fellini and Ingmar Bergman will be studied. Thursdays, Sept. 2 – Oct. 7, 7 – 9:45 p.m. Tuition is $165.

Advanced Jewelry
Students learn sophisticated metal-working techniques, dye forming, roller printing, faceted stone setting, and enameling. Thursdays, Sept. 2 – Nov. 4, 7:15 – 10 p.m. Cost is $200 for the class and $45 lab fee.

Child in the Home, School and Community
The effects of home life, school and communities on a child’s development will be studied. Designed for teachers and prospective teachers of young children, especially those working in children’s and home day care centers in California. Thursdays, Sept. 2 – Dec. 16, 7:15 – 9:45 p.m. Tuition is $236.  


Orthodox Christian Spirituality
An introduction to the traditions of Orthodox Eastern Christianity. Thursdays, Sept. 2 – Dec. 16, 7:15 – 9:45 p.m. Cost is $220 for audit purposes only.

 

September 3
Ceramics Workshop
Explore design problems with ceramic materials incorporating wheel-thrown and hand-building techniques, development of a personal style and advanced firing techniques. Students must have advanced ceramics ability, and consent of the instructor. Space is limited; call 310-338-3053. Meets Fridays, Sept. 3 – Nov. 19, 1 – 4:30 p.m. Cost is $344 and $125 for the lab fee. 


Dances of Greece
Discover Greek dance and culture. Fridays, Sept. 3 – Dec. 17, 7:15 – 9:45 p.m. Cost is $165 for audit purposes.

 

September 4
Child in a Diverse Society I
A survey of the critical theories of empowerment of young children and their parents in such pluralistic areas as race, gender, culture, religion and disability. Saturdays, Sept. 4 – Oct. 9, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tuition is $236.

September 5
In Search of Extraterrestrial Life – Online Course
Examines new and exciting approaches and discoveries in science, explores their meaning and suggests where science may lead and society might deal with the discovery of extraterrestrial life. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 5 – Nov. 6, 6:30 – 9:15 p.m. Tuition is $200. Access to a computer and Internet is required.  

September 6
Social and Pharmacological Aspects of Alcohol and Other Drugs of Abuse
Asystematic review of all major psychoactive drugs from a historical, social and pharmacological perspective, focusing on the bio-psychosocial factors that contribute to drug use and patterns, and progressions of alcoholism and other drug dependency. For students working toward the Addiction Counseling Certificate at LMU, counselors working in alcohol and drug treatment centers, and therapists who need training in this specialized area. Meets Mondays, Sept. 6 – Dec. 13, 7:15 – 9:45 p.m. Tuition is $450.
