LMU EXTENSION OFFERS CLASSES, WORKSHOPS AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS

April 16, 2004 - LMU Extension announces the following classes, workshops and special programs starting in May and offered at the Loyola Marymount University Westchester Campus:

May 17
Summer 2004 Theology Program begins at LMU
Graduate-level courses in scripture, ethics and spirituality will be offered through Loyola Marymount University's Summer Theology Program beginning May 17. Enrollment is open to everyone, and most courses may be taken for either graduate credit or personal enrichment/audit purposes. The three-unit courses offered are: "Foundations of New Testament Theology," with Dr. Jeffrey Siker and "Issues in Christian Spirituality," with Dr. Douglas Burton-Christie. Tuition is $300 (per course) if taken for enrichment purposes and $1992 (per course) for three units of graduate credit. Online Class "Creating a Business Plan" offered
This online program offered by Loyola Marymount University will develop the skills necessary to create a business plan to facilitate the initial development or growth of the student's own business. Students will participate in a mock acquisition of a private company, learn how to analyze financials, how to finance the endeavor, conduct due diligence and determine value. The course is open to all business professionals. This online program may be applied to the LMU Certificate in Business Administration. Students must have access to a computer and the Internet for this course. Tuition is $250 and participants receive two hours of continuing education credit. May 18 - 20: Fitness Courses start at LMU
Beginning Hatha Yoga I: Students will learn yoga postures, and discover how yoga can promote physical, emotional and mental well-being. The class is open to all and meets Tuesdays, May 18 - June 22, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in the University Hall Fitness Room, Loyola Marymount University. Participants should bring their own yoga mat. Tuition is $135.

Lyrical Jazz Dance: Both beginning and intermediate students of dance can enjoy the practice of lyrical jazz dance. Classes will be held Wednesdays, May 19 - June 23, 6 - 7:30 p.m. in the University Hall Fitness Room at Loyola Marymount University. Lyrical jazz dance style takes its inspiration directly from the music, bringing its roots and emotions into the choreographed movements. Jocelyn Piot, who trained in Paris and New York, will teach students ballet and jazz positions, stretching, strengthening, coordination movements, turns, jumps and floor work. Tuition is $150.

Mat Pilates I: Developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, this form of exercise is based on the principal that the mind and body must work in harmony to achieve total fitness. Students will learn how to retrain the body to move in a balanced and more efficient way through exercises designed to eliminate muscle imbalances. Class meets Thursdays, May 20 - June 24, 5:15 - 6:16 p.m. in the University Hall Fitness Room. Participants should bring their own yoga mat. Tuition is $135.

Rhythmic Yoga I: Heidi Pimentel, an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and co-star on ESPN2's "Gotta Sweat", conducts the class, which meets Thursdays, May 20 - June 24, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. This class focuses on strengthening, stretching and re-aligning the body. Each class closes with a period of instructor-led deep relaxation. Tuition is $135.

May 18 and 20
Human Resources Management Online Classes offered at LMU
Beginning May 18, this highly interactive 12-week online program provides comprehensive instruction in all major functional areas of Human Resources Management. Students share real-life work experiences during "discussion forums", participate in rewarding instructor-guided research projects, and advance their careers by expanding their knowledge of the latest principles and the important roles of HR professionals. The certificate program is open to all interested in advancing their career in human resources management, and is especially valuable to professionals working toward the SHRM certificate. Students must have access to a computer and the Internet for this course. Tuition is $600 and participants receive four semester hours of continuing education credit from Loyola Marymount University.

LMU also will offer "Legal Issues in Human Resources" online, May 20 - July 22. This popular online course examines all important California and federal statutes, new "headline-grabbing" court cases, and basic legal principles that directly relate to Human Resources Management. Students conquer otherwise complicated legal issues, improve their ability to deal with counsel, and develop a legal expertise essential for taking their careers to the next level. Professionals and entrepreneurs seeking a more in-depth understanding of the laws impacting HR functions, particularly HR managers, and experienced generalists, attorneys, CPAs, supervisors will benefit from this course. Participants receive three semester hours of continuing education credit. Tuition is $350. Students must have access to a computer and the Internet to participate in online courses. Integrating Technology for Elementary Educators
The main objective of this class is to plan, implement, document and evaluate two technology projects in the classroom that integrate technology into a theme or unit. Other objectives are to collaborate with others at school, create a year-long plan, and attend and evaluate a technology leadership meeting at the site. This course fulfills the technology requirement for the Level II Teaching Credential. The class meets Saturdays, May 22 - July 24, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in University Hall 2418. Beginning and Advanced Jewelry Classes
In this dual-level class, students learn dye forming, roller printing, faceted stone setting, and enameling. For advanced students designing is developed to a more sophisticated level. The class meets Saturdays, May 22 - July 24, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Burns 129, Loyola Marymount University. Tuition is $200 and lab fee is $45.
