LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY IN LOS ANGELES ANNOUNCES
$500,000 GIFT TO ESTABLISH MARKETING
SCHOLARSHIPS
Rita And Sam
Garvin Give Half Million Dollar Gift To The College Of Business
Administration
April 15, 2004 - Loyola Marymount
University alumna Rita Garvin [Lib Arts ’90] and her husband
Sam have pledged $500,000 to the College of Business Administration
to establish the Continental Promotion Group Marketing Excellence
Scholarship Awards. The endowed fund is named after the
worldwide promotion management and fulfillment company, Continental
Promotion Group Inc. (CPG), of which Sam Garvin is chairman and
chief executive officer. The endowed scholarship will generate
annual tuition support of $5,000 to each of five outstanding
business students who are pursuing marketing internships.
“All students deserve the opportunity to learn from the
invaluable experiences an internship offers, regardless of whether
or not it is a paid position,” said university President
Robert B. Lawton, S.J. “The CPG Marketing Excellence
Scholarship allows marketing students to explore internships at
companies that may not have been financially possible for them
before.”
"Sam and I have always believed that internships provide students
with the necessary skills to be successful leaders in
business,” said Rita Garvin. “It’s critical that
internships are made accessible to students in their particular
areas of study to enhance their learning experiences.”"
The first two students to earn the CPG Scholarships are Theresa
Bruketta (Concord, Calif.) and Diego Cevallos (Los Angeles,
Calif.), both seniors and honor students. They were selected by the
dean of the College of Business Administration and an awards
committee based on the following criteria: an essay demonstrating
how marketing may contribute to the betterment of society, a
personal achievements resume, a letter of recommendation from a
faculty member, and a brief statement of the student’s career
goals.
"We’re delighted to be able to offer deserving students
exciting opportunities that may not have been attainable for
them,” said Rick Baer, vice president international, of
Continental Promotion Group. “In addition, we’re
thrilled that Rita and Sam choose to name the scholarship after
CPG, associating our company with such a fine institution as Loyola
Marymount and making new connections in Los Angeles."
The College of Business Administration offers a bachelor's of
business administration degree, a bachelor's of science degree in
accounting, as well as the master's in business administration
degree in both the traditional and the executive format.
"Internships allow students to apply the theories they learn in the
classrooms to real-world situations, gaining the skills needed to
succeed in their professional careers," said Dean John T. Wholihan.
"The CPG Marketing Excellence Scholarship is an exceptional way to
reward our most promising students."
