FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

'GIMME SHELTER: CALLING CALIFORNIA HOME' -- LMU'S CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF L.A. HOSTS STATEWIDE DIALOGUE ADDRESSING CALIFORNIA'S SHELTER ISSUES APRIL 21-23
Leading Experts Gather At Loyola Marymount University In Los Angeles for the 15th Annual California Studies Conference

April 7, 2004 -- The fifteenth annual conference of the California Studies Association to be held at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles on April 21-23 will focus on issues of shelter.  An essential requirement for all people -- and other life forms -- shelter signifies not only a "roof over your head," but also connotes safe haven from such physical dangers as violence, war, and weather.

The event will be co-sponsored by LMU’s Center for the Study of Los Angeles and the California Studies Association.  All events will take place at University Hall on the Loyola Marymount campus and are open to the public.

Highlights of the conference include:

  • Gregory Rodriquez, senior fellow at the New America Foundation and contributing editor for The Los Angeles Times will be the keynote speaker on Thursday, April 22, at the conference luncheon.

  • Malcolm Margolin, publisher and founder of Heyday Books, and Gilda Haas, director of Strategic Action for a Just Society, will be honored on Friday, April 23, as the winners of the Carey McWilliams and California Commonwealth Awards, respectively.

  • Greg Medeiros, Centennial Founders LLC, will speak on suburban development on April 22 at 5 p.m.  Part of CSLA’s Urban Issues Lecture Series, the event is open to anyone interested in the trends and conditions impacting Los Angeles and urban America.

  • Half-day field trips to Playa Vista, Ballona Wetlands, Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant, or a selection of Murals in Los Angeles.
