THE STUDY OF L.A. HOSTS STATEWIDE DIALOGUE ADDRESSING CALIFORNIA'S
SHELTER ISSUES APRIL 21-23
Leading Experts Gather At Loyola Marymount University In Los
Angeles for the 15th Annual California Studies
Conference
April 7, 2004 -- The fifteenth
annual conference of the California Studies Association to be held
at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles on April 21-23 will
focus on issues of shelter. An essential requirement for all
people -- and other life forms -- shelter signifies not only a
"roof over your head," but also connotes safe haven from such
physical dangers as violence, war, and weather.
The event will be co-sponsored by LMU’s Center for the Study
of Los Angeles and the California Studies Association. All
events will take place at University Hall on the Loyola Marymount
campus and are open to the public.
Highlights of the conference
include:

Gregory Rodriquez, senior
fellow at the New America Foundation and contributing editor for
The Los Angeles Times will be the keynote speaker on
Thursday, April 22, at the conference luncheon.

Malcolm Margolin, publisher
and founder of Heyday Books, and Gilda Haas, director of Strategic
Action for a Just Society, will be honored on Friday, April 23, as
the winners of the Carey McWilliams and California Commonwealth
Awards, respectively.

Greg Medeiros, Centennial
Founders LLC, will speak on suburban development on April 22 at 5
p.m. Part of CSLA’s Urban Issues Lecture Series, the
event is open to anyone interested in the trends and conditions
impacting Los Angeles and urban America.

Half-day field trips to Playa Vista,
Ballona Wetlands, Hyperion Sewage Treatment Plant, or a selection
of Murals in Los Angeles.
