FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EIGHT ARTISTS GAIN MOMENTUM AT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY
EXHIBIT BEGINNING APRIL 16

April 7, 2004 - Momentum brings together eight diverse emerging student artists, presenting individual works. Opening on April 16 and continuing until May 8 in the Von Der Ahe Library on the Loyola Marymount University campus, a reception for the artists is planned for May 7, from 5-7 pm in the George V. Donning Courtyard, Burns Fine Arts Complex.  Hours are M-Th: 8am-12am, F: 8am-5pm, Sat: 9am-9pm, and Sun: 12pm-12am. The exhibit and reception are open to the public free of charge.

Mike Alive creates an installation exploring feelings that hide limitation. Victoria Ash, suggesting specific relationships in her Mind Diary, forms personal narratives with objects and acrylic paint. Nicole Betterman highlights the eccentricities and peculiarities of her subject by photographing her family in uncomfortable or awkward spaces, while her self-portrait paintings explore themes of fear and infirmity. Justine Carroll presents a series of four oil paintings that involve both figurative and abstracted landscape imagery. Sofa You Love, by Ingrid Castro expresses the importance and potential of the often unappreciated and underrepresented couch. Krystyna Flores’ photographic installation, Urban Nomad, studies the landscape within a capitalist society and comments on pollution, the exhaustion of natural resources and the effects of federal and state sanctioned laws ignoring these issues. Fernando Rodriguez creates whimsical sculptures about ideas of movement and energy out of found objects and common materials
