Leadership Programs

Mission Statement

The Leadership Development Initiative, grounded in the University's mission to educate the whole person, provides leadership education, development and training to cultivate personal leadership in all students.

Leadership Definition

Leadership, according to the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, follows these assumptions:

  • Leadership is concerned with effecting change on behalf of others and society.
  • Leadership is collaborative.
  • Leadership is a process rather than a position.
  • Leadership is value based.
  • All students are potential leaders.

We Value...

Self-Authorship - as a process of making meaning of one's experience through self-reflection to form an opinion or decision.  Self-authorship promotes the internal capacity to choose one's beliefs, values, identity, and relationships.

Learning - as a life long process.

Interculturalism - as sharing and learning across cultures with the aim of promoting understanding, equality, harmony, and justice in a diverse society.

Civic Engagement - as responsible community involvement and adding one's voice to advocate on behalf of others.

Social Justice - as understanding the causes of injustice and working for changes in society that enhance the dignity of the human person.
