The Biology Department at LMU is committed to introducing students to the excitement of biology, to promoting academic excellence and to offering a diverse program of courses to prepare students for their chosen career goals.

Courses are offered by the Department in many fields, including molecular biology, genetics, marine biology, field biology, botany, physiology and development.

Graduates of the program go on to pursue careers in the health professions (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, etc.), as well as careers in teaching, research, environmental and marine biology, law, administration, business, and even art.

September 21, 2009

Dr. Kam Dahlquist (Biology) and Dr. Ben Fitzpatrick (Mathematics) have been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to study "Stochastic Dynamic Network Models of Gene Regulation under Environmental Stress."  The award totals over $240,000 for a three year period and provides funds for Drs. Dahlquist and Fitzpatrick to carry out research during the academic year and summer with undergraduate students from the Biology and Mathematics Departments.

October 31, 2008

Dr. Gary Kuleck and the Genomics Education Partnership have published a paper in the journal Science that describes their successful undergraduate research program in the area of genome annotation of the dot chromosome in various Drosophila (fruit fly) species.

October 13, 2008:

The 2008 SACNAS Conference was recently held at the Salt Palace Convention Center, Salt Lake City, UT (Oct 9-12), attended by 14 LMU students, most of whom are members of the recently formed LMU Student Chapter of SACNAS. Among this group were students who gave 6 poster presentations (out of a total of 590 undergraduate posters). At the closing banquet on Saturday night, 3 of these posters were among the 66 which were selected for awards. These posters and their presenters are listed below, along with their respective fields:
